The Concept of Veiling Spiritual Truths in the Prologue of Masnavi Book Five

In the prologue of Book Five of the Masnavi, Jalaluddin Rumi addresses his spiritual companion and inspirer, Husam al-Din Chalabi. Rumi explains that he cannot openly declare Husam al-Din's true spiritual magnitude because ordinary people (likened to a "small bird") lack the capacity to digest such profound truths (the "falcon's morsel"). If he were to speak without veils, the "narrow throats" of the masses could not bear it. Therefore, Rumi asserts he must use metaphors and dilute his teachings, metaphorically mixing "water and oil". Additionally, Rumi introduces the concept that praising a spiritual master is akin to praising the sun: the one who praises the sun is actually praising their own healthy vision, demonstrating that they possess the spiritual eyes capable of perceiving divine light.
