The Psychological Effect of Temaroz (Feigning Illness) in the Masnavi
In Book Three of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi (Section 63), Rumi cites the famous prophetic tradition (Hadith): 'In tamāradtum tamaradtu' ('If you feign illness, you will become ill') to illustrate the psychological power of suggestion. When the schoolmaster falls into bed due to the delusion (wahm) cast by his students, Rumi emphasizes that pretending to be sick or accepting a false suggestion acts as a self-fulfilling prophecy. This concept shows that the mind has a powerful influence over the physical state; harboring thoughts of illness, or behaving as though one is sick, eventually induces actual physical ailment and suffering, even in a perfectly healthy person.
