The Spiritual Alchemy of Repentance in the Masnavi
In Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, repentance (tawbah) is depicted as a spiritual alchemy (kimiya) capable of transmuting the base dross of human error into spiritual gold. Drawing from the Bedouin husband's dramatic shift from anger to regret in Book One, Section 120, Rumi illustrates that genuine contrition invokes the boundless mercy of the Divine Court. In this state of total humility and self-correction, worldly dualities—such as infidelity and faith, or existence and non-existence—are reconciled and purified. By submitting the ego to this divine 'alchemy,' even the most hardened heart or 'copper' soul is transformed into the 'gold' of spiritual realization.
