دفتر اول - بخش ۸۲ - سؤال کردن رسول روم از عمر رضی‌الله عنه از سبب ابتلای ارواح با این آب و گل جسم / Book One - Section 82 - The Roman Envoy Asking Umar, May God be Pleased with Him, About the Cause of the Affliction of Spirits with This Water and Clay of the Body

Text and Translation

He said, “O Umar, what wisdom and secret lies in imprisoning that pure one in this turbid place?
Pure water has been hidden in clay; the pure soul has been bound to bodies.”
He said, “You are making a wondrous inquiry; you are binding meaning in letters.
You have imprisoned free meaning; you have bound recollection in letters.
You have done this for the sake of benefit, though you yourself are veiled from benefit.
He from whom benefit was born: how would He not see what has become visible to us?
There are hundreds of thousands of benefits, and each one, compared with that One, is little though hundreds of thousands of times over.
That breath of your speech, which is only a part among parts, has become beneficial; why, then, should the Whole of wholes be empty of benefit?
You, who are a part, do your work with benefit; why then do you lay your hand to reproaching the Whole?
If speech has no benefit, do not speak; and if it has, leave objection and seek gratitude.
Gratitude to God is a collar on every neck, not argument and sour-facedness.
If being sour-faced counts as gratitude, then no one gives thanks like vinegar.
If vinegar wants a way into the liver, tell it: go, become sikanjabin through sugar.
Meaning in poetry is never without stumbling; it is like a sling-stone and is not under control.”
