Text and Translation

O Radiance of the Real, Husam al-Din, take hold; add one or two sheets in description of the Pir.
Though your delicate body has no strength, without the sun we have no light.
Though you have become lamp and glass, you are the chief of the heart and hold the thread.
Since the end of the thread is in your hand and desire, the pearls of the heart’s necklace are from your bounty.
Write the states of the path-knowing Pir; choose the Pir and know him as the very path.
The Pir is summer, and people are the month of Tir; people are like night, and the Pir is the moon.
I have called young fortune Pir, for he is old through God, not old through days.
He is such a Pir that he has no beginning; with such a unique pearl there is no partner.
Old wine grows stronger, especially wine that is from Us.
Choose a Pir, for without a Pir this journey is very full of affliction, fear, and danger.
On a road you have traveled many times, without a guide you have been bewildered.
Then a road you have never seen at all: beware, do not go alone; do not turn your head from the guide.
If his shadow is not over you, fool, then the cry of the ghoul will keep you wandering.
The ghoul will cast you from the road into harm; many more clever than you have been ruined on this road.
Hear from the Prophet of the wayfarers’ straying, what that evil-running Iblis did to them.
He carried them a hundred thousand years’ journey away from the highway and made them unlucky and naked.
Look at their bones and hair; take warning, and do not drive the donkey toward them.
Take the donkey by the neck and pull it toward the road, toward the good road-keepers and road-knowers.
Beware, do not leave the donkey; do not take your hand from it, for its love is toward the meadow.
If for one moment you let it loose in heedlessness, it will go leagues toward herbage.
The grass-drunk donkey is the enemy of the road; O you whom that donkey has destroyed as many a servant.
If you do not know the road, whatever the donkey wants, do the opposite; that itself will be the right road.
Consult women, and then oppose them; whoever does not disobey them is ruined.
Be little a friend to caprice and desire, for it is what leads you astray from the path of God.
Nothing in the world breaks this caprice like the shadow of fellow travelers.
