Book Two - Section 41 - The Saying of the Blind Beggar That 'I Have Two Blindnesses'

Text and Translation

There was a blind man who kept saying, "Mercy!
I have two blindnesses, O people of the world."
"So bring me double mercy, heed!
For I have two blindnesses and I am in between."
Someone said: "We see one blindness in you;
What is the other blindness? Reveal it."
He said: "I have an ugly voice and unpleasant melody;
Ugly voice and blindness made two."
"My ugly cry is a source of grief;
People's affection diminishes because of my cry."
"My ugly voice, wherever it goes,
Becomes a source of anger, grief, and rancor."
"Double your mercy for my two blindnesses;
Make room for one so unable to be contained."
The ugliness of the voice diminished from this complaint;
The people became of one heart with mercy toward him.
When he spoke his secret it served him well —
The grace of the heart's voice made his voice gracious.
But he whose inner voice was also bad —
Those three blindnesses would be eternal estrangement.
But the generous givers who give without cause —
Perhaps they would place a hand on his ugly head.
When his voice became pleasant and pitiable,
The hearts of the hard-hearted became like wax before him.
The cry of the unbeliever is ugly and braying;
Therefore it does not become a companion of acceptance.
"Akhsaʾū" has come upon the ugly voice,
Which was drunk on people's blood like a dog.
Since the bear's lament was mercy-drawing,
Was your lament not thus unpleasant?
Know that you have acted like a wolf toward Joseph,
Or have drunk the blood of an innocent.
Repent and vomit out what you have consumed;
And if the wound has grown old, go and cauterize it.
