Book Two - Section 35 - Moses, Peace Be Upon Him, Rebuking the Shepherd's Prayer

Text and Translation

Moses saw a shepherd on the road who was saying, “O God, O You who choose, where are You, so that I may become Your servant?
I will sew Your sandals, comb Your head, wash Your clothes, kill Your lice, bring milk before You, O honored one.
I will kiss Your little hand and rub Your little foot; when sleep comes, I will sweep Your sleeping place.
May all my goats be sacrificed for You; in remembrance of You are my cries of ‘hey-hey’ and ‘hey-hay.’”
The shepherd was saying such vain things.
Moses said, “O fellow, to whom is this addressed?”
He said, “To the One who created us; from Him this earth and heaven came into being.”
Moses said, “Ah, you have become very misguided.
Before even becoming a Muslim, you have become an unbeliever.
What babble is this, what unbelief and corrupt nonsense?
Stuff cotton into your mouth.
The stench of your unbelief has made the world stink; your unbelief has torn the brocade of religion to rags.
Sandals and leggings are fitting for you; how could such things be proper for the Sun?
If you do not shut your throat against this speech, a fire will come and burn creation.
If no fire has come, what is this smoke?
What is this blackened soul and rejected spirit?
If you know that God is the Judge, how can you accept such babble and audacity from yourself?
Mindless friendship is itself enmity; God Most High has no need of such service.
To whom are you saying this, to an uncle and aunt?
Body and need do not belong among the attributes of the Lord of Majesty.
Milk is drunk by one who is growing and being nourished; sandals are worn by one who needs feet.
And if this speech of yours is meant for His servant, the one of whom God said, ‘He is Me and I am he,’ the one of whom He said, ‘I was sick and you did not visit Me’ - I became ill, not he alone - the one who has become ‘by Me he hears and by Me he sees’: even regarding such a servant, this too is futile.
Speaking without adab to God's elect kills the heart and leaves the page black.
If you call a man Fatima, although men and women are all of one kind, he will seek your blood as far as he can, even if he is good-natured, forbearing, and quiet.
Fatima is praise with respect to women; if you say it to a man, it is the wound of a spear.
Hands and feet are praise with respect to us; with respect to God's purity they are defilement.
‘He begets not and was not begotten’ is fitting for Him; He is the creator of parent and child.
Whatever is body has birth as its attribute; whatever is born belongs on this side of the stream, because it is of generation and corruption and is lowly; it is originated and surely requires an originator.”
The shepherd said, “O Moses, you have sewn up my mouth, and through remorse you have burned my soul.”
He tore his garment, gave a hot sigh, set his head toward the wilderness, and went away.
