هم ز ابراهیم ادهم آمدستکو ز راهی بر لب دریا نشست
Also from Ibrahim Adham comes this tale:
How, on a journey, he sat by the seashore—
دلق خود می دوخت آن سلطان جانیک امیری آمد آنجا ناگهان
That sultan of souls was sewing his dervish cloak
When a prince suddenly arrived there.
آن امیر از بندگان شیخ بودشیخ را بشناخت سجده کرد زود
That prince was one of the Sheikh's servants;
He recognized the Sheikh and immediately prostrated himself.
خیره شد در شیخ و اندر دلق اوشکل دیگر گشته خلق و خلق او
He stood transfixed at the Sheikh and at his cloak,
Wondering how his nature and character had taken on another form—
کو رها کرد آنچنان ملکی شگرفبر گزید آن فقر بس باریک حرف
How he had abandoned such a magnificent kingdom
And chosen that poverty, so subtle in its wisdom;
ترک کرد او ملک هفت اقلیم رامی زند بر دلق سوزن چون گدا
How he had relinquished the realm of the seven climes
And was plying a needle through a cloak like a beggar.
شیخ واقف گشت از اندیشه اششیخ چون شیرست و دلها بیشه اش
The Sheikh became aware of his thoughts,
For the Sheikh is like a lion and hearts are his thicket.
چون رجا و خوف در دلها رواننیست مخفی بر وی اسرار جهان
Since hope and fear course through hearts,
The secrets of the world are not hidden from him.
دل نگه دارید ای بی حاصلاندر حضور حضرت صاحب دلان
Guard your hearts, O fruitless ones,
In the presence of the possessors of the heart.
پیش اهل تن ادب بر ظاهرستکه خدا زیشان نهان را ساترست
Before the people of the body, courtesy is in outward form,
For God veils the hidden from them.
پیش اهل دل ادب بر باطنستزانک دلشان بر سرایر فاطنست
Before the people of the heart, courtesy is in the inward,
For their hearts are discerning of secrets.
تو بعکسی پیش کوران بهر جاهبا حضور آیی نشینی پایگاه
You do the reverse: before the blind, for the sake of rank,
You come with outward presence and take your seat with dignity.
پیش بینایان کنی ترک ادبنار شهوت را از آن گشتی حطب
Before the seeing, you abandon courtesy—
By this you have become fuel for the fire of lust.
چون نداری فطنت و نور هدیبهر کوران روی را می زن جلا
Since you lack discernment and the light of guidance,
Polish your face for the blind.
پیش بینایان حدث در روی مالناز می کن با چنین گندیده حال
Before the seeing, smear filth upon your face;
Preen yourself in such a rotten state.
شیخ سوزن زود در دریا فکندخواست سوزن را به آواز بلند
The Sheikh swiftly cast his needle into the sea
And called out for the needle with a loud voice.
صد هزاران ماهی اللهییسوزن زر در لب هر ماهیی
Hundreds of thousands of divine fish—
A golden needle in the lip of each fish—
سر بر آوردند از دریای حقکه بگیر ای شیخ سوزنهای حق
Raised their heads from the sea of Truth, saying:
"Take them, O Sheikh—these needles of Truth!"
رو بدو کرد و بگفتش ای امیرملک دل به یا چنان ملک حقیر
He turned to him and said: "O prince,
Is the kingdom of the heart better, or that contemptible kingdom?
این نشان ظاهرست این هیچ نیستتا بباطن در روی بینی تو بیست
"This is an outward sign; it is nothing at all—
Go inward, and you will see twenty times more.
سوی شهر از باغ شاخی آورندباغ و بستان را کجا آنجا برند
From the garden, they bring a branch to the city,
But where could they bring the garden and orchard there?
خاصه باغی کین فلک یک برگ اوستبلک آن مغزست و این عالم چو پوست
"Especially a garden of which this celestial sphere is but one leaf—
Nay, that is the kernel and this world is like its husk.
بر نمی داری سوی آن باغ گامبوی افزون جوی و کن دفع زکام
You take no step toward that garden—
Seek more of its fragrance and cure your head-cold,
تا که آن بو جاذب جانت شودتا که آن بو نور چشمانت شود
"So that that fragrance may draw your soul,
So that that fragrance may become the light of your eyes."
گفت یوسف ابن یعقوب نبیبهر بو القوا علی وجه ابی
Yusuf, son of the prophet Ya'qub, said—
For the sake of fragrance: "Cast it upon my father's face."
بهر این بو گفت احمد در عظاتدائما قرة عینی فی الصلوة
For this fragrance, Ahmad said in his exhortations:
"Forever, the delight of my eye is in prayer."
پنج حس با همدگر پیوسته اندرسته این هر پنج از اصلی بلند
The five senses are interconnected with one another;
These five all spring from one exalted origin.
قوت یک قوت باقی شودما بقی را هر یکی ساقی شود
The strengthening of one becomes the strengthening of the rest;
Each one becomes the cup-bearer to the remaining.
دیدن دیده فزاید عشق راعشق در دیده فزاید صدق را
The seeing of the eye increases love;
Love in the eye increases sincerity.
صدق بیداری هر حس می شودحسها را ذوق مونس می شود
Sincerity becomes the wakefulness of every sense,
And taste becomes the intimate companion of the senses.
