Section 18 - Addressing the Truth of the Soul Regarding the Meaning of Golrokh's Lamentation

Text and Translation

O sweet-singing, intoxicated turtledove,
Break your habit from this rubbish of the world.
Since you have become a guide, leave the house;
Why do you drag straws to the nest?
As long as you gave this nest to the dust,
You gave straws through the path of the five senses.
Breathe a 'blessed are you' from the treacherous prison,
Fly properly towards the branch of the Tuba tree.
Open your wings under its shade,
Sweeten your throat and then sing the secret.
Sing in such a way that those pure ones of the circle,
All at once throw their cloaks upon you.
From the garden of speech, in thought of Golruy,
Become ten-tongued like the lily and tell the state of the rose.
When for a month the rose bore anger against the nurse,
And withdrew its shadow from that sun-faced one,
Her heart kept burning in love for that rose-faced one,
Like a candle, it kept burning from the heat of that auspicious one.
She approached Gol in the pain of separation,
So that she might rise from the hand of impatience.
When she saw that sun of the heart-soothers,
Like a candle, she became melting from the fire of Gol.
Her heart had fiery flames;
Her heart became like wax, even if it was of iron.
Her face had hidden drops of blood;
She would shed blood upon it even if she had a soul of stone.
The particles of her body became like quicksilver;
How can a particle endure in the air?
It was a dark night and her chest was boiling;
From impatience, she did not become silent for a moment.
When night fell, from her two onyx eyes full of stars,
Night that night remained in place from watching.
Gol opened her tongue, saying, 'O you without food and sleep,
From sleeplessness, I have become drowned by my eyes.
For this reason, sleep does not come to my eyes,
Because the water of my eyes steals my sleep away.
I do not know what I will see from the days,
For I find neither sleep nor rest.
Perhaps my sleep was bound and thrown into the water,
Since water opened its source from my sleepless eyes.
Tonight, I am alive like a candle from burning,
I will not be alive except until day.
Tonight, I have given a roasted heart,
Like a candle, I have given my soul from the fire of the heart.
Tonight, I am like a candle with a short life,
Remaining in such burning until dawn.'
It was a night whose sky was like its earth,
The Day of Resurrection had become its companion.
It had covered the face of the world with pitch,
And filled it with smoke from the fish to the moon.
The moon of the sphere had turned its back in anger,
The finger of the night had poked a finger in the eye.
All the night-watchmen of the roof of the sphere,
Had fallen headlong drunk, in a basin full of blood.
Bonds placed on the feet of the stars,
The muezzin had fallen from the minaret.
The rooster of the morning had died in the ruins,
The drummer's wife had died in the house.
The Zangi of the night had opened his hands,
And put snakes and dragons into the fire.
The pole had hosted a feast for the sphere,
The pole had cast heaviness upon the heavens.
The morning star of the sphere had remained in the grave,
The lamp of the sky had remained night-blind.
The cycle of the moon had torn its garment,
And cut the tongues of the birds of dawn.
All night, the dawn had held its breath,
And drawn a coarse hair-cloak over the world.
The stars crucified and the moon in bonds,
The army of day far off, and the road blocked.
The eye of the star had drawn a needle into its eye,
The coarse cloak of the night had drawn indigo into its eye.
The Alexander of the night had gone into the darkness,
The bird of the dawn hidden like Khidr.
At once, the Milky Way of the seven veils,
Had all consumed an anesthetic potion.
The Zangi of the night had fallen headlong,
The star had nailed its skirt.
The Harut of dawn had worn black,
The moon had fallen into Zubaida's well.
With a needle, the bird of the night from the seven domes,
Was picking golden millet from the stars.
In such a night, how can one see the tip of a needle?
How can one finally pick millet with a needle?
A night as full of blackness as the face of a Zangi,
The rust of the night reaching the back of the fish.
The key of the morning had fallen into the sea,
A mountain had fallen upon the world.
You would say the morning has no inclination to breathe,
Even if it comes out of a stone, it is not there.
Gol raised a cry, 'O night, for a moment,
Open a door and buy me back for a soul.
You, O night, if you are not the Day of Resurrection,
Why, then, do you not rise more lightly?
I have remained burning like a candle tonight;
Perhaps the day has sunk into the night tonight.
How long will you keep my heart roasted, O morning?
Breathe for a moment if you have a soul, O morning.
Perhaps, O morning, you do not rise from it,
Because you are an accomplice of the Day of Resurrection.'
When the obscurity of the morning went beyond bounds,
The Roman lock of the morning was opened.
When the morning, this gold-woven brocade of the sphere,
Took it out from the green workshop;
When the indigo dust of the night rose from the road,
The Joseph-like face of the day rose from its place.
All night, the nurse was listening to Gol;
In that unconsciousness, she kept her aware.
The old nurse could not bear the endurance,
For Golrokh was lamenting bitterly like the high string of a lute.
She went to Gol and wept bitterly like a rose;
She struck her face much and wept profusely.
She turned on her side in the embrace of that moon,
She wandered the path amidst dust and blood.
She said to Gol, 'O you whose soul has gone into blood,
By my soul, you have made me tired of my world.
I am a fish left on dry land;
You are a moon on the side shedding blood.
It has been a month for me that there is a state without you,
For from my month, a night without you is a year.
Do not ask me how I am in this state,
Left helpless like a bird without feathers and wings.
Neither the face to find a remedy for the matter,
Nor the provision for Gol to remain so miserable.
From your hand, I have fallen out of work,
At once, I was left on foot from two donkeys.
Now since I have spoken of abandoning name and shame,
With cunning, I slept upon this stone of the head.
What do you command me so that I may do it?
For I will execute your command from the core of my soul.
