Section 15 - The Beginning of the Story
Text and Translation
| There was a handmaiden for Caesar in the palace, | |
| Who had as a suitor a dark-skinned gatekeeper. | |
| There was no human in Rome or Baghdad | |
| As beautiful as that fairy-born houri. | |
| Her lips were the life-remedy of lovers, | |
| They were a book of joy for the heartsick. | |
| Her mouth was full of sugar like a sweetmeat dish, | |
| What can I say of her pistachio-like lips, red as pomegranate seeds? | |
| Thousands of musky clusters were in her hair, | |
| Stretching like clusters of grapes around her face. | |
| She had washed each hair with fresh musk, | |
| And washed her face with the water of life. | |
| With her eyebrows, she cast an arch over the heavens, | |
| With her tresses, she spread musk over the desert. | |
| The silk of her cheek had the softness of beaver-fur, | |
| Her face was the dyer of pomegranate flowers and roses. | |
| At nightfall, King Caesar entered the palace, | |
| Where that idol with a face like the moon was seated. | |
| When the King saw her beautiful face, | |
| He found his heart intoxicated by her every feature. | |
| Softly he said: 'O beloved, draw me into your embrace, | |
| Bestow a kiss or two upon my head immediately.' | |
| The handmaiden leaped up before the king | |
| And, like her long tresses, laid her face at his feet. | |
| The King loaded sugar from her sweetness, | |
| Tasting sugar and engaging in intimacy. | |
| When the King pitched his tent upon the mound of silver, | |
| The casket of rubies was split in two. | |
| Warm water poured from the wind-catcher, | |
| Sugar melted on the lips and poured out milk. | |
| When both the milk and sugar were finished, | |
| The handmaiden became pregnant by the King. | |
| After one week, an event occurred | |
| That took the King away from that moon of two-weeks. | |
| He went out from the island like the wind, | |
| For a messenger arrived to him in the morning. | |
| Saying: 'The infidel intends to attack the land of Rome, | |
| Having unknown designs against the Christians.' | |
| The King left that idol and departed, | |
| He went to the sea, and from him a hundred rivers of blood flowed. | |
| Like Alexander seeking the water of life, | |
| That second Jamshid set forth toward the battlefield. | |
| The army, like ants, were all under his command, | |
| King Caesar acting like Solomon. | |
| The valleys and plains turned black from his army, | |
| From fear of the king, the color fled from the face of the moon. | |
| Drowned in iron armor, even the hooves, | |
| Except for the eyes, from the horse's ears to its tail. | |
| The army moved like mountains, troop after troop, | |
| Like waves upon waves on the surface of the sea. | |
| Under the weight of the army, the back of the fish was broken, | |
| Turning its weary belly upward. | |
| The armor was not cast off, out of fear, | |
| But the foot of the bull was involved. | |
| When Caesar departed, that beautiful handmaiden | |
| Rejoiced and felt proud of the blessed child. | |
| Saying: 'If I become the mother of his child, | |
| I shall become strong like a green branch. | |
| When my green branch brings forth fruit, | |
| I shall emerge from barrenness all at once. | |
| But if the proud branch remains fruitless, | |
| Let it burn, so that only the burden-bearer remains.' | |
| Now behold how the wheel of fate, like a juggler, | |
| Turned the game-pieces in this affair. | |
| King Caesar had a chief wife, | |
| Whose heart was darkened with jealousy. | |
| She owned a thousand handmaidens herself, | |
| And of them, a hundred servants and a hundred attendants. | |
| She saw her wealth as no less than Korah's, | |
| And saw her honor as greater than Caesar's. | |
