| آن یکی در وقت استنجا بگفت | که مرا با بوی جنت دار جفت |
| One person during istinjā' said: "Keep me united with the fragrance of Paradise." | |
| گفت شخصی خوب ورد آورده ای | لیک سوراخ دعا گم کرده ای |
| Someone said: "You have brought a fine wird, But you have lost the right aperture for the prayer. | |
| این دعا چون ورد بینی بود چون | ورد بینی را تو آوردی به کون |
| This prayer is the wird of the nose — how so? Yet you brought the wird of the nose to the anus. | |
| رایحهٔ جنت ز بینی یافت حر | رایحهٔ جنت کم آید از دبر |
| The fragrance of Paradise is found through the nose, O freeman — The fragrance of Paradise seldom comes through the posterior. | |
| ای تواضع برده پیش ابلهان | وی تکبر برده تو پیش شهان |
| O you who brought humility before fools, And you who brought pride before kings — | |
| آن تکبر بر خسان خوبست و چست | هین مرو معکوس عکسش بند تست |
| That pride before the base is good and fitting; Beware, do not go in reverse — its opposite is your bondage. | |
| از پی سوراخ بینی رست گل | بو وظیفهٔ بینی آمد ای عتل |
| For the sake of the nostril the rose grew; Fragrance is the function of the nose, O dullard. | |
| بوی گل بهر مشامست ای دلیر | جای آن بو نیست این سوراخ زیر |
| The rose's scent is for the sense of smell, O bold one — This lower aperture is not the place for that scent. | |
| کی ازین جا بوی خلد آید ترا | بو ز موضع جو اگر باید ترا |
| When will the fragrance of khuld come to you from this place? Seek fragrance from its proper source, if you have need of it. | |
| هم چنین حب الوطن باشد درست | تو وطن بشناس ای خواجه نخست |
| Likewise, ḥubb al-waṭan holds true — But first know your homeland, O master. | |
| گفت آن ماهی زیرک ره کنم | دل ز رای و مشورتشان بر کنم |
| The clever fish said: 'I will take the road; I will tear my heart away from their opinion and counsel.' | |
| نیست وقت مشورت هین راه کن | چون علی تو آه اندر چاه کن |
| It is not the time for counsel — make haste on the road; Like ʿAlī, cry your cry into the well. | |
| محرم آن آه کم یابست بس | شب رو و پنهان روی کن چون عسس |
| The intimate of that cry is rare — let it be — Travel by night and move in secret, like the night watchman. | |
| سوی دریا عزم کن زین آب گیر | بحر جو و ترک این گرداب گیر |
| Resolve toward the sea from this pond; Seek the ocean and leave this whirlpool. | |
| سینه را پا ساخت می رفت آن حذور | از مقام با خطر تا بحر نور |
| That wary one made his breast a foot and walked on, From the place of peril to the sea of light. | |
| هم چو آهو کز پی او سگ بود | می دود تا در تنش یک رگ بود |
| Like a deer with a dog behind it, Running as long as a single vein remained in its body. | |
| خواب خرگوش و سگ اندر پی خطاست | خواب خود در چشم ترسنده کجاست |
| Sleeping like a hare with a dog in pursuit is an error — Where is sleep itself in the eyes of one afraid? | |
| رفت آن ماهی ره دریا گرفت | راه دور و پهنهٔ پهنا گرفت |
| That fish went and took the path to the sea; It took the long road and the vast expanse. | |
| رنجها بسیار دید و عاقبت | رفت آخر سوی امن و عافیت |
| It suffered many hardships, and in the end Went at last toward safety and well-being. | |
| خویشتن افکند در دریای ژرف | که نیابد حد آن را هیچ طرف |
| It cast itself into the deep sea Whose limits no shore can find. | |
| پس چو صیادان بیاوردند دام | نیم عاقل را از آن شد تلخ کام |
| Then when the fishermen brought their net, The half-wise one tasted bitterness from that. | |
| گفت اه من فوت کردم فرصه را | چون نگشتم همره آن رهنما |
| He said: 'Alas, I missed the opportunity — Why did I not become a companion to that guide? | |
| ناگهان رفت او ولیکن چونک رفت | می ببایستم شدن در پی بتفت |
| He departed suddenly, but once he had gone, I should have followed after him in haste.' | |
| بر گذشته حسرت آوردن خطاست | باز ناید رفته یاد آن هباست |
| To grieve over what has passed is an error — What is gone does not return; to remember it is futile. | |
