دفتر چهارم - بخش ۴۵ - قصهٔ شاعر و صله دادن شاه و مضاعف کردن آن وزیر بوالحسن نام / Book Four - Section 45 - The Tale of the Poet and the King Giving a Reward and Its Doubling by the Vizier Named Abu'l-Hasan

Text and Translation

A poet brought a poem before the king,
In hope of a robe of honor, respect, and rank.
The king was generous and commanded a thousand
Of red gold, and gifts, and scatter-offerings.
Then his vizier said, "This is too little—
Give him ten thousand as a gift, so he may go.
From such a poet—nay, from you, who are the sea—
Even the ten thousand I named is little."
He spoke to that king of jurisprudence and philosophy,
Until a tithe of a threshing-floor arose from the balance.
He gave him ten thousand, and a robe befitting him;
That head became a house of gratitude and praise.
Then he inquired: whose effort was this?
Who had shown the king his worthiness?
Then they told him: such-and-such al-Dīn, the vizier—
He of the good name, good character, and conscience.
In praise of him he wrote a long poem
And went back toward his home.
Without tongue or lip, those very blessings of the king
Were praising the king and the king's robes of honor.
