دفتر چهارم - بخش ۲۱ - تفسیر این حدیث کی مثل امتی کمثل سفینة نوح من تمسک بها نجا و من تخلف عنها غرق / Book Four - Section 21 - Commentary on this Hadith that the likeness of my Ummah is like the Ark of Noah: whoever holds fast to it is saved, and whoever stays behind from it is drowned

Text and Translation

For this the Prophet declared: "I
am like a ship upon the flood of time.
My companions and I are like Noah's Ark —
whoever grasps hold of it finds triumph.
Since you are with a Sheikh, you are far from ugliness;
day and night you journey, and you are on the ship.
You are under the shelter of a soul-bestowing Soul;
you sleep within the ship, yet travel the road.
Ask of the Prophet of your own age;
rely less on your own skill and your own desire.
Even if you are a lion, if you travel the path without a guide,
you are self-regarding, in error, and debased.
Take heed! Fly only with the wings of the Sheikh,
so that you may behold the aid and armies of the Sheikh.
At one moment the wave of his grace is your wing;
the fire of his wrath is for a moment your bearer.
Do not reckon his wrath as the opposite of his grace —
see the unity of both in their effect.
At one moment, like earth, he makes you green;
at another, he fills you with wind and makes you swell.
He gives the gnostic's body the quality of inert matter,
so that on it may grow the rose and the glad wild rose.
But only he sees — no other sees —
nor does Paradise yield its scent save to the pure mind.
Empty your mind of denial of the Friend,
so that the sweet basil may receive fragrance from the Friend's garden.
So that you may find the scent of Paradise from my Friend,
as Muhammad found the fragrance of the All-Merciful from Yemen.
If you stand in the ranks of those who ascend in Mi'raj,
Nothingness will draw you upward like Buraq.
Not like the earthly ascent up to the moon,
but like the ascent of the reed-pen up to sugar.
Not like the ascent of vapor up to the sky,
but like the ascent of the embryo up to intellect.
How fair a Buraq the grey steed of Nothingness became —
it will bring you to Being, if you are nothing.
Mountains and seas it brushes with its hoof,
leaving behind the world of sense.
Draw your feet into the ship and journey freely,
as souls stream toward the Beloved of the soul of souls.
With no hand and no foot, travel to the goal,
as souls once rushed forth from non-existence.
You would have torn through the veil of analogy in speech,
if the listener's ear were not drowsy.
O sky, rain pearls upon his words!
O world, be ashamed before his world!
If you rain pearls, your own pearl becomes a hundredfold;
your inert self becomes seeing and speaking.
Then you will have scattered gifts for your own sake,
since every capital of yours becomes a hundredfold.
