Text and Translation

The story is of that pond, O stubborn one,
In which there were three remarkable fish.
You may have read it in Kalila, but that
Is the husk of the tale; this is its soul's marrow.
Some fishermen passed by that pond
And glimpsed its hidden secret.
Then they hastened to fetch their nets;
The fish became aware and alert.
The one who was wise resolved upon the road,
Resolved upon the difficult, unwanted road.
He said: I will not consult with these,
For they will surely weaken my certainty about what is decreed.
Love of birthplace and homeland rages fierce in their souls;
Their laziness and ignorance would strike against me.
For consultation one needs a worthy living soul
Who will make you alive — and where is that living one?
O traveler, take counsel with a fellow traveler,
For your foot is lame — take counsel.
Pass beyond the breath of ḥubb al-waṭan — do not halt;
The true homeland is on that side; the soul is not on this side.
If you desire the homeland, cross to the other side of the river;
Do not misread this true ḥadīth as wrong.
