Text and Translation

I will tell the tale of Saba like one who yearns,
As the morning breeze came toward the tulip field.
The forms met on the day of their union;
The children returned in the direction of their origin.
The community of hidden love among peoples
Is like generosity, around which circles the sickness of blame.
The abasement of souls is from their phantom-bodies;
The dignity of phantom-bodies is from their souls.
O lovers, may you be watered with refreshment!
You are the everlasting ones, and what endures is yours.
O seekers, arise and love!
That is the fragrance of Joseph — breathe it in!
Come, O Solomonic speech of birds;
Sing out the call of every bird that comes.
Since God has sent you to the birds,
He has given you precedence in the melody of every bird.
To the bird of jabr, speak the tongue of jabr;
To the broken-winged bird, speak of patience.
The patient bird — keep it content and exempt;
To the 'Anqā bird, recite the attributes of Qāf.
Warn the dove against the falcon;
To the falcon, speak of forbearance and caution.
And that bat which remains without means,
Make it companion and intimate with the light.
Teach the quarrelsome partridge peace;
Show the roosters the signs of dawn.
Go on thus, from the hoopoe to the eagle;
Show the way — and God knows best what is right.
