| آن یکی مرغی گرفت از مکر و دام | مرغ او را گفت ای خواجهٔ همام |
| A certain man caught a bird through cunning and snare; The bird said to him: O noble master, | |
| تو بسی گاوان و میشان خورده ای | تو بسی اشتر به قربان کرده ای |
| You have eaten many cows and sheep, You have sacrificed many camels in offering, | |
| تو نگشتی سیر زانها در زمن | هم نگردی سیر از اجزای من |
| You were never sated by them through time, Nor will you be sated by the parts of me. | |
| هل مرا تا که سه پندت بر دهم | تا بدانی زیرکم یا ابلهم |
| Release me, and I will give you three counsels, So you may know whether I am clever or a fool. | |
| اول آن پند هم در دست تو | ثانیش بر بام کهگل بست تو |
| The first counsel, here while in your hand; The second, upon the mud-daubed roof; | |
| وآن سوم پندت دهم من بر درخت | که ازین سه پند گردی نیکبخت |
| And the third counsel I will give from the tree, So that from these three counsels you may become fortunate. | |
| آنچ بر دستست اینست آن سخن | که محالی را ز کس باور مکن |
| The counsel while on your hand is this word: Do not believe an impossibility from anyone. | |
| بر کفش چون گفت اول پند زفت | گشت آزاد و بر آن دیوار رفت |
| When it spoke the first weighty counsel in his palm, It became free and flew to that wall. | |
| گفت دیگر بر گذشته غم مخور | چون ز تو بگذشت زان حسرت مبر |
| It said: Secondly, do not grieve over the past; What has passed from you, bear no regret for it. | |
| بعد از آن گفتش که در جسمم کتیم | ده درمسنگست یک در یتیم |
| Then it said: Hidden within my body Is ten drams' weight — a single orphan pearl. | |
| دولت تو بخت فرزندان تو | بود آن گوهر به حق جان تو |
| The fortune of you, the luck of your children — That jewel was — by the truth of your soul! | |
| فوت کردی در که روزی ات نبود | که نباشد مثل آن در در وجود |
| You have lost a pearl that was not your allotted sustenance, For no like of that pearl exists in all existence. | |
| آنچنان که وقت زادن حامله | ناله دارد خواجه شد در غلغله |
| Just as a woman in labor moans at the time of birth, The master was thrown into tumult and clamor. | |
| مرغ گفتش نی نصیحت کردمت | که مبادا بر گذشتهٔ دی غمت |
| The bird said: Did I not counsel you That you should have no grief over yesterday that has passed? | |
| چون گذشت و رفت غم چون می خوری | یا نکردی فهم پندم یا کری |
| Since it has passed and gone, why do you grieve? Either you did not grasp my counsel, or you are deaf. | |
| وان دوم پندت بگفتم کز ضلال | هیچ تو باور مکن قول محال |
| And the second counsel I gave you: out of delusion, Do not believe any impossible claim at all. | |
| من نیم خود سه درمسنگ ای اسد | ده درمسنگ اندرونم چون بود |
| I myself am not even three drams' weight, O lion — How could ten drams' weight be inside me? | |
| خواجه باز آمد به خود گفتا که هین | باز گو آن پند خوب سیومین |
| The master came back to himself and said: Come now, Repeat that good third counsel. | |
| گفت آری خوش عمل کردی بدان | تا بگویم پند ثالث رایگان |
| It said: Yes, you have acted well — know this — So that I may freely give the third counsel. | |
| پند گفتن با جهول خوابناک | تخم افکندن بود در شوره خاک |
| Giving counsel to a slumbering, ignorant fool Is like casting a throne into barren saltpan soil. | |
| چاک حمق و جهل نپذیرد رفو | تخم حکمت کم دهش ای پندگو |
| The tear of stupidity and ignorance accepts no mending; Sow fewer seeds of wisdom upon it, O giver of counsel. | |
