| ای رسولان می فرستمتان رسول | رد من بهتر شما را از قبول |
| O messengers, I send you back as messengers — My rejection is better for you than acceptance. | |
| پیش بلقیس آنچ دیدیت از عجب | باز گویید از بیابان ذهب |
| Before Bilqīs, recount all the wonders you have seen, From the wilderness of gold. | |
| تا بداند که به زر طامع نه ایم | ما زر از زرآفرین آورده ایم |
| So she may know that we are not greedy for gold — We have brought gold from the Creator of gold. | |
| آنک گر خواهد همه خاک زمین | سر به سر زر گردد و در ثمین |
| He who, if He wills, could make all the dust of the earth Become gold and precious pearl from end to end. | |
| حق برای آن کند ای زرگزین | روز محشر این زمین را نقره گین |
| For this, O gold-chooser, God will make This earth silver on the Day of Resurrection. | |
| فارغیم از زر که ما بس پر فنیم | خاکیان را سر به سر زرین کنیم |
| We are free of gold, for we are full of craft — We can turn all the people of dust to gold from head to foot. | |
| از شما کی کدیهٔ زر می کنیم | ما شما را کیمیاگر می کنیم |
| When do we ever beg gold from you? We are making you into alchemists. | |
| ترک آن گیرید گر ملک سباست | که برون آب و گل بس ملکهاست |
| Abandon all that, even if it be the kingdom of Sheba — Beyond water and clay there are many kingdoms. | |
| تخته بندست آن که تختش خوانده ای | صدر پنداری و بر در مانده ای |
| What you have called a throne is a plank-prison — You imagine it a seat of honor, yet you remain at the door. | |
| پادشاهی نیستت بر ریش خود | پادشاهی چون کنی بر نیک و بد |
| You have no sovereignty over your own beard — How then can you exercise sovereignty over good and evil? | |
| بی مراد تو شود ریشت سپید | شرم دار از ریش خود ای کژ امید |
| Without your will your beard grows white — Be ashamed before your own beard, O crooked-hoped one. | |
| مالک الملک است هر کش سر نهد | بی جهان خاک صد ملکش دهد |
| Mālik al-mulk is He — whoever bows their head to Him Is given a hundred kingdoms without the world of clay. | |
| لیک ذوق سجده ای پیش خدا | خوشتر آید از دو صد دولت ترا |
| But the taste of a single prostration before God Is sweeter to you than two hundred fortunes. | |
| پس بنالی که نخواهم ملکها | ملک آن سجده مسلم کن مرا |
| Then you will cry out: I want no kingdoms — Grant me the sovereignty of that prostration. | |
| پادشاهان جهان از بدرگی | بو نبردند از شراب بندگی |
| The kings of the world, through their base nature, Have caught no scent of the wine of servitude. | |
| ورنه ادهم وار سرگردان و دنگ | ملک را برهم زدندی بی درنگ |
| Otherwise, like Adham, bewildered and dazed, They would have overturned their kingdoms without delay. | |
| لیک حق بهر ثبات این جهان | مهرشان بنهاد بر چشم و دهان |
| But God, for the stability of this world, Has placed a seal upon their eyes and mouths. | |
| تا شود شیرین بریشان تخت و تاج | که ستانیم از جهانداران خراج |
| So that throne and crown may become sweet to them — That we may collect tribute from the world-rulers. | |
| از خراج ار جمع آری زر چو ریگ | آخر آن از تو بماند مردریگ |
| If from tribute you gather gold like sand, In the end it remains without you — a dead man's leavings. | |
| همره جانت نگردد ملک و زر | زر بده سرمه ستان بهر نظر |
| Kingdom and gold are not companions of your soul — Give gold, receive kohl for the sake of sight. | |
| تا ببینی کین جهان چاهیست تنگ | یوسفانه آن رسن آری به چنگ |
| So you may see that this world is a narrow pit — Seize that rope in the manner of Joseph. | |
| تا بگوید چون ز چاه آیی به بام | جان که یا بشرای هذا لی غلام |
| So that when you ascend from the pit to the rooftop, The soul may say: yā bushrāy hādhā lī ghulām. | |
| هست در چاه انعکاسات نظر | کمترین آنک نماید سنگ زر |
| In the pit there are reflections of vision — The least of which makes stone appear as gold. | |
| وقت بازی کودکان را ز اختلال | می نماید آن خزفها زر و مال |
| In playtime, through disorder, for children Those potsherds appear as gold and wealth. | |
| عارفانش کیمیاگر گشته اند | تا که شد کانها بر ایشان نژند |
| The Gnostics have become its alchemists, Until the mines became wretched for them. | |
