آن مسلمان ترک ابله کرد و تفت
زیر لب لاحول گویان باز رفت

گفت چون از جد و بندم وز جدال
در دل او پیش می‌زاید خیال

پس ره پند و نصیحت بسته شد
امر اعرض عنهم پیوسته شد

چون دوایت می‌فزاید درد پس
قصه با طالب بگو بر خوان عبس

چونک اعمی طالب حق آمدست
بهر فقر او را نشاید سینه خست

تو حریصی بر رشاد مهتران
تا بیاموزند عام از سروران

احمدا دیدی که قومی از ملوک
مستمع گشتند گشتی خوش که بوک

این رئیسان یار دین گردند خوش
بر عرب اینها سرند و بر حبش

بگذرد این صیت از بصره و تبوک
زانک الناس علی دین الملوک

زین سبب تو از ضریر مهتدی
رو بگردانیدی و تنگ آمدی

کندرین فرصت کم افتد این مناخ
تو ز یارانی و وقت تو فراخ

مزدحم می‌گردیم در وقت تنگ
این نصیحت می‌کنم نه از خشم و جنگ

احمدا نزد خدا این یک ضریر
بهتر از صد قیصرست و صد وزیر

یاد الناس معادن هین بیار
معدنی باشد فزون از صد هزار

معدن لعل و عقیق مکتنس
بهترست از صد هزاران کان مس

احمدا اینجا ندارد مال سود
سینه باید پر ز عشق و درد و دود

اعمیی روشن‌دل آمد در مبند
پند او را ده که حق اوست پند

گر دو سه ابله ترا منکر شدند
تلخ کی گردی چو هستی کان قند

گر دو سه ابله ترا تهمت نهد
حق برای تو گواهی می‌دهد

گفت از اقرار عالم فارغم
آنک حق باشد گواه او را چه غم

گر خفاشی را ز خورشیدی خوریست
آن دلیل آمد که آن خورشید نیست

نفرت خفاشکان باشد دلیل
که منم خورشید تابان جلیل

گر گلابی را جعل راغب شود
آن دلیل ناگلابی می‌کند

گر شود قلبی خریدار محک
در محکی‌اش در آید نقص و شک

دزد شب خواهد نه روز این را بدان
شب نیم روزم که تابم در جهان

فارقم فاروقم و غلبیروار
تا که که از من نمی‌یابد گذار

آرد را پیدا کنم من از سبوس
تا نمایم کین نقوشست آن نفوس

من چو میزان خدایم در جهان
وا نمایم هر سبک را از گران

گاو را داند خدا گوساله‌ای
خر خریداری و در خور کاله‌ای

من نه گاوم تا که گوسالم خرد
من نه خارم که اشتری از من چرد

او گمان دارد که با من جور کرد
بلک از آیینهٔ من روفت گرد

English translation

That Muslim abandoned the fool and, hotly agitated, went back, muttering 'la hawla' under his breath. He said: Since from my earnestness and insistence and disputation, more imagination arises beforehand in his heart, the way of admonition and counsel is closed; the command 'turn away from them' has become continuous. When your medicine increases the pain, then tell the story to a seeker; recite 'Abasa.' Since the blind man has come seeking the Real, because of his poverty one should not wound his breast. You are eager for the guidance of the great ones, so that the common people may learn from the leaders. O Ahmad, when you saw that a group of kings became listeners, you were pleased, hoping perhaps these chiefs would become friends of the religion; they are chiefs over Arab and Abyssinian. This fame will pass beyond Basra and Tabuk, because people are upon the religion of their kings. For this reason you turned your face from the rightly guided blind man and grew cramped, saying that in this opportunity such a stopping-place seldom occurs; you are among companions and your time is ample. We become crowded in a narrow time; I give this counsel not from anger or strife. O Ahmad, before God this one blind man is better than a hundred Caesars and a hundred viziers. Recall 'people are mines'; take heed: one mine may be worth more than a hundred thousand. A concealed mine of ruby and carnelian is better than hundreds of thousands of copper mines. O Ahmad, here wealth is of no use; the breast must be full of love, pain, and smoke. A blind man with an illumined heart has come; do not close the door. Give him counsel, for counsel is his right. If two or three fools deny you, why become bitter, since you are a mine of sugar? If two or three fools accuse you, God bears witness for you. He said: I am free of the world's acknowledgment; what grief has one for whom God is witness? If a bat has nourishment from a sun, that is proof that it is not the sun. The aversion of little bats is proof that I am the majestic shining sun. If a dung beetle becomes attracted to rosewater, that proves it is not rosewater. If a counterfeit coin becomes a buyer of the touchstone, defect and doubt enter into its touchstone-hood. The thief wants night, not day; know this. I am not night; I am day, for I shine in the world. I am the separator, I am Faruq, and like a sieve, so that straw does not find passage through me. I make flour distinct from bran, to show that these are forms and those are souls. I am like God's balance in the world; I display every light thing apart from the weighty. A calf takes a cow for God; a donkey is buyer of goods fit for a donkey. I am not a cow for a calf to buy me; I am not a thorn for a camel to graze on me. He thinks he acted unjustly toward me; rather, he swept dust from my mirror.
