Book Two - Section 91 - The Tale of the Archer and His Fear of the Rider Who Was Going Through the Thicket

Original content

English translation

A rider, armed and very formidable, was going through the thicket on a noble horse. An archer happened to see him and, out of fear of him, drew the bow. As he was about to shoot an arrow, the rider shouted, 'I am weak, although my body is bulky. Beware, beware: do not look at my bulk, for at the time of battle I am less than an old woman.' The archer said, 'Go, for you spoke well; otherwise I would have shot my sting at you out of my own fear. Many people have been killed by the helmet of combat, with such a sword in hand but without manliness. If you wear the armor of many Rostams, your life is gone when you are not the man for it. Make your soul the shield; lay down the sword, O son. Whoever was headless received a head from this King. That weapon of yours is your trickery and deceit; it was born from you and has wounded your soul too. Since you have gained no benefit from these stratagems, abandon stratagem, so that good fortune may come forth. Since for even one moment you have eaten no fruit from craft, renounce craft and seek the Lord of favors. Since these sciences are not blessed for you, make yourself foolish and pass beyond the ill-omened thing. Say like the angels: We have no knowledge, O God, except what You have taught us.'
