زحلش زیر پای کرده نثارهمت و ذهن و حفظ و فکر و وقار
Saturn scatters beneath his feet
Ambition, intellect, memory, thought, and dignity
مشتری جانش را سپرده عطاصدق و عدل و صلاح و دین و وفا
Jupiter bestows upon his soul the gift
Of truth, justice, righteousness, faith, and loyalty
داده مریخش از برای خطرمجد و اقدام و عزم و زور و ظفر
Mars gives him, for facing danger,
Glory, initiative, resolve, strength, and victory
شمس پیشش کشیده بهر جمالنعمت و رفعت و بها و جلال
The Sun draws before him, for the sake of beauty,
Grace, exaltation, splendor, and majesty
زهره بر وی نشانده از پی نورزینت و خلق و ظرف و ذوق و سرور
Venus places upon him, for the sake of light,
Adornment, good character, elegance, taste, and joy
برده پیشش عطارد از معلومفطنت و حلم و رای و نطق و علوم
Mercury brings before him, from all that is known,
Intelligence, forbearance, judgment, speech, and sciences
کرده بر وی نثار جرم قمرسرعت و نشو و لطف و زینت و فر
The body of the Moon scatters upon him
Swiftness, growth, grace, adornment, and radiance
آمده با هزار عز و مرادبر سر چارسوی کون و فساد
He arrived with a thousand honors and desires
At the crossroads of generation and corruption
در جهان خدای دزدیدهماه نو دین به روی او دیده
In the world, God has hidden
The new moon of faith, seen upon his face
لاجرم در جهان کن مکنششده نیک از جمال او سکنش
Inevitably, in the world of 'Be, and it is,'
Its inhabitants grew virtuous through his beauty
برگرفته به فضل بی یارانکله از تارک وفاداران
By grace, without companions, he took
The cap from the crown of the loyal ones
همه را در طرب طلب کردهپس به مازاغشان ادب کرده
He summoned everyone in joyous pursuit
Then taught them manners with 'His sight did not swerve'
بوده یاران او ز روم و حبشبا صهیب و بلال عیشش خوش
His companions were from Rome and Abyssinia
His life was pleasant with Suhayb and Bilal
بوده اصحاب صفه یارانشهمچو ابری که عفو بارانش
The People of the Bench (Ashab al-Suffah) were his companions
Like a cloud whose rain is forgiveness
جان فدا کرده بهر یزدان رااهد قومی بگفته نادان را
He sacrificed his soul for God
Saying 'Guide my people' to the ignorant
در فنا راعی رمه شده اواو همه گشته تا همه شده او
In annihilation, he became the shepherd of the flock
He became all, until all became him
وآن چهاری که پیش خوان بودندمغز و دل دیدگان و جان بودند
And those four who were at the forefront of the feast
Were the brain, the heart, the eyes, and the soul
هریکی زان چهار چون مرداناندرین ساحت و درین میدان
Each of those four, like true men,
In this courtyard and in this arena:
مغز را صدق داده دل را عدلدیده را شرم داده جان را بذل
He gave truth to the brain, justice to the heart,
Modesty to the eye, and generosity to the soul
دل و چشمش ز راه نتف و نتفخلق و خلقش ز بهر عز و شرف
His heart and eye from the path of fragments
His creation and character were for glory and honor
نیک را خود نکرده هرگز ردوآنچه بد را نیامده زو بد
He never rejected the good
And no evil came from him to the bad
نفس شرک دوستان دربستقفس جان دشمنان بشکست
He tied shut the breath of polytheism in friends
He shattered the soul's cage of enemies
آن نفس با صفا چو درهم شدآن قفس هیزم جهنم شد
When that pure breath intertwined,
That cage became the firewood of Hell
طاق در مهر بی تناهی اوطوق داران پادشاهی او
The arch in his infinite love
The collar-wearers of his kingdom
طوق دارانش از نبی و ولیمتمسک به عروة الوثقی
His collar-wearers from among prophets and saints
Holding fast to the 'firmest handle'
جمله یارانش جان فدا کردندلفظ او روز و شب غذا کرده
All his companions sacrificed their souls
Making his words their food, day and night
جاه او هم رکاب علییندین او هم عنان یوم الدین
His rank rode alongside the highest heavens (Illiyin)
His religion held the reins of the Day of Judgment
در احد با احد یکی بودهورچه یارانش اندکی بوده
In Uhud, he was one with the One,
Even though his companions were few
گوهر از زخم سنگ بدروزییافت از ساز جان او سوزی
The pearl, from the strike of a stone on an ill-fated day,
Found a burning from the harmony of his soul
لب و دندان او پر از خون شداشک چشمش چو موج جیحون شد
His lips and teeth became full of blood
The tears of his eyes became like the waves of the Oxus
اهد قومی در آن میان گفتهدر کنارش عقیق ناسفته
Saying 'Guide my people' in the midst of it
By his side, unpierced carnelian
خواجه ابلیس نعره زن بر کوهکاینت فتحی بزرگ و کار شکوه
Master Iblis (Satan) shouted on the mountain:
'This is a great victory and a magnificent deed!
کشته شد نقطهٔ امید و املروی یاران به پشت گشت بدل
The focal point of hope and expectation has been killed
The faces of the companions turned to their backs.'
هند هودج نهاده بر سر کوهکافران پیش او گروه گروه
Hind placed her litter on top of the mountain
The disbelievers stood before her in groups upon groups
بانگ می کرد کین نه از غدرستبلکه این کار کینهٔ بدرست
She cried out that this is not from treachery
But this deed is revenge for Badr
دست احمد بریده شک را پیسر حربه اش بریده جان ابی
Ahmad's hand severed the foundation of doubt
The point of his spear severed the soul of Ubayy
زو چو شد جان او فزون ز اتشجان جبرئیل نعره از دل خوش
From him, when his soul became fiercer than fire,
Gabriel's soul cried out from a happy heart
زانکه می دید نصرت از درگاهاز پی فتح آن سپهر سپاه
Because he saw victory from the divine court
Following the triumph of that heavenly army
نعرهٔ کافران بر اوج شدهنحر هریک چو بحر و موج شده
The shout of the disbelievers rose to the peak
The throat of each became like a sea and wave
که فگندیم سرو را از پایسرو بستان فروز شرع آرای
Saying, 'We have felled the cypress from its feet
The cypress that illuminates the garden and adorns the law.'
مثله افگنده حمزه در میدانهمچو هفتاد زان جوان مردان
Hamza cast down, mutilated in the field
Like seventy of those brave young men
مجد او آسمان جان ملکشرفش پاسبان بام فلک
His glory is the sky of the angel's soul
His honor is the guardian of the roof of the heavens
ماه بود آن اما طارم قابپیش روی از جلال بسته نقاب
He was a moon, but the vault of the frame
Bound a veil before his face out of majesty
که بدیدنش آشکار و نهاندیدهٔ سعد و سینهٔ سلمان
Who saw him open and hidden?
The eye of Sa'd and the chest of Salman
باز بودند عیب را عیبهصخر و بوجهل و شیبه و عتبه
Again, they were the receptacle for flaws:
Sakhr, Abu Jahl, Shayba, and Utba
زان همه کور و بی بصر ماندندکاندرین راه مختصر ماندند
Therefore, they all remained blind and sightless
Because they remained in this brief path
کرد بر روی کشتگان نیازدر دروازهٔ قیامت باز
He opened, to the slain of supplication,
The door of the gate of Resurrection
از درون و برون به لفظ و بیانبسته بر دیو ده دریچهٔ جان
From inside and outside, with word and expression
Closing the ten windows of the soul to the demon
بوده در بندگی و خار و رایسرو آزاد جویبار خدای
Being in servitude and thorns and opinion
The free cypress of God's stream
چشم دین روشن از بقایش بودنور خورشید از آن لقایش بود
The eye of religion was bright from his enduring existence
The light of the sun was from his countenance
بدل خون ز بهر سر یقیندین روان کرده در یکاد و یبین
Instead of blood, for the sake of the secret of certainty
Religion flowed in 'yakad' and 'yabin'
ماه بود آن سپهر فرخندهکه خور از روی او زند خنده
He was the moon of that auspicious sphere
That the sun smiles from his face
خندهٔ مه ز قرص خور باشدخور مه جامه مختصر باشد
The moon's smile is from the disc of the sun
The sun of the moon is a brief garment
کرده از بهر طفل بی فرمانمادر طبع را سیه پستان
Making, for the disobedient child,
The mother of nature black-breasted
وز خرد سوی جان زیرک و غمرمرگ را دوست روی کرده چو عمر
And from intellect towards the soul of the clever and the naive,
Making death a friendly face like Umar
چون درخت بهار لطف قدمآبش و تازگیش کرده بهم
Like the tree of spring, the grace of pre-eternity
Has combined its water and freshness
شمع بود آن همای فرخندهاز درون سوز و از برون خنده
He was a candle, that auspicious huma bird
Burning from within and smiling from without.
