Section 29 - On Existence and Non-Existence

Text and Translation

Strive so that you become existent from non-existence,
and become drunk from the wine of God.
Whomever religion makes existent,
the ball and polo-mallet of time are in his hand.
When your soul becomes drunk from this sip,
you will become low upon the heights of existence.
Whomever He sets free there
has a ring in the ear and a shackle on the foot.
Yet that shackle is better than the steed of fortune,
yet that ring is better than the ring of the throne.
Consider the shackle He places on you as a crown,
and if He gives you coarse felt, consider it a fine quilt.
For He is both the Benefactor and the Beautiful-Doer,
for He is both the Generous and the Bestower of favors.
Why do you worry about destitution,
or value joy, cleverness, and worth?
Be glad in Him and wise in His religion,
so that you may find His pleasure and steadfastness.
The wise one is he who bears His burden,
joy is that which He does not leave.
Fortunate is he who is His servant,
and in all matters, finds Him sufficient.
When you become leafless from these branches,
you will put your arms around the waist of death.
You will no longer deny death,
and you will receive news from the world of life.
When your hand reaches the branch of death,
your foot runs around the palace of leaves.
A foot that is far from the vault of guidance
is not a foot; it is a drunken brain.
