Section 2 - The Chapter on Gnosis

Text and Translation

No one could know Him by themselves;
His essence can only be known through Him.
Reason paid its due and ran well,
yet recognized helplessness as the ultimate knowing on His path.
His grace said, 'Know Me,'
otherwise, who could know Him through reason and the senses?
How can the senses serve as a guide?
How can a walnut stand on the top of a dome?
Reason is a guide, but only to His door,
until His grace leads you to Him.
You will not find the way by the proof of intellect;
do not act foolishly in your bewilderment like others.
His grace is our guide on the path;
His creation is the proof and witness pointing to Him.
O you who have become helpless in knowing yourself,
how will you ever know God?
When you are powerless even in your own self-knowledge,
how can you be a gnostic of the Creator?
When you do not know the secret of your own creation,
how can you imagine that you know Him?
Imaginations fall short of His attributes;
intellects make vain boasts in trying to grasp Him.
In describing Him, when seeking proof,
speech becomes anthropomorphism and silence becomes negation.
The ultimate end of reason on His path is bewilderment;
the source of reason toward Him is protective zeal.
He is the desire and master of reason and soul,
the ultimate goal of the seeker and traveler.
Our reason is a guide pointing only to His existence;
all existents are beneath the feet of His Being.
His action is outside of inside and outside;
His essence is beyond 'how' and 'why.'
Perception has not found a way to His essence;
on that path, the heart and soul of reason are torn apart.
Without the kohl of familiarity with Him,
reason remains ignorant of His divinity.
Why do you urge imagination to search for Him?
How can a temporal creation speak of Eternity?
Prophets are bewildered by this discourse;
saints are astonished by these attributes.
