Section 13 - On Guidance

Text and Translation

The cause of the gift of His favors,
Making the soul guided, and He is its guide.
In the path of your religious law, obligations, and traditions,
Count the favor of God, not your own doing.
He is the giver of light to certainty and instruction,
He is both the guardian of the world and the seer of the world.
How can the heavy body worship Him?
How can the spirit and soul comprehend Him?
The ruby of the mine is but a piece of stone there;
Intellect and soul are but meddling intruders there.
Silence in praise is tongue enough for you;
Idle speech is sorrow and loss enough for you.
Behold the favor of the Creator, the Guide,
Who chose humanity above all creation.
After disbelief, He made us people of faith;
In the darkness, He made us see the light.
His Presence, for both male and female,
Is completely independent of elders and prophets.
For the sake of guidance, He appointed six leaders,
Making a cat a chivalrous youth and a dog a spiritual guide.
As for anyone who does not turn their face to the Truth,
Deem an idol whatever they know and possess.
If His grace is your perfect guide,
The heavens thereafter will be your servant.
One who has turned their face away from the Presence of Truth,
I will not say they are human, in truth.
A dog is better than a worthless person who turned away,
For without seeking, a dog does not find prey.
Why did the watchdog of the straw-shed grow fat?
Did it not become better in its tasks than a greyhound?
By the face of morning and the back of twilight,
On the path of love, go forward toward the Truth.
What is the day that it should tear the veil?
What is the night that it should make the veil?
Whoever came to Him and lent an ear,
Did not come on their own, but His grace brought them.
Know also that it is from Him that the soul prostrates,
Just as the cloud is generous because of the sun.
Whatever guidance you possess, O dervish,
Count it as God's gift, not your own doing.
The Barmakids became famous through generosity,
When they became intimate companions with munificence.
Their name remained eternal like the spirit,
Even though the heavens declared their annihilation.
The people of this age, though they seem pleasant,
Are bold-eyed like flies and bring harm to the eyes.
In speech, they are all sweet like sugar,
But in generosity, they tear hearts and trouble souls.
