Text and Translation

As long as the common people are in the world of material means,
They are all in a ship and fast asleep.
The heart of a commoner is like the eye of a beloved:
Half-sick and half-awake.
Foul and tasteless is the company of the common folk,
Like cooked dog meat and raw, unrefined men.
They are of that group from whom the intellect
Shrinks with aversion towards the dervishes.
From the heart of the commoner, the miser, and the envious,
Malice arises, but never generosity.
The base people are like flies and scorpions:
One with a sting in its mouth, the other in its rear.
The vile world does not place
A pearl umbrella upon the head of a demon.
From the threat of the sting of a world of scorpions,
My eyes are full of lashes like wheat.
They have faces gloomy like clouds
Because, like clouds, they have water in their bellies.
Like donkeys, they are worthy of being sacrificed,
For they possess the brain of a donkey.
Like flies, they wash their faces for the sake of bread;
Like cats, they seek the dining table.
Their reward for laughing
Is to have their mustaches defecated upon.
In times of playfulness, they are filthy like flies;
In conversation, they are like dirt in anger.
Impudent like flies, yet for bread,
They are the prey of the destitute spider.
To sustain the life of a guest,
They order their own souls to fast all year round.
If a single guest arrives at their table,
It is as if a knife has reached their bone.
If this group calls out to a mountain,
The mountain would not echo back any greatness in reply.
For the sake of one or two tiny bites,
They have prepared many winding paths.
The common people are like wasps,
From whose existence rectitude is far.
Their desire for gain is like their hell;
Their ledger of expenses is like their kitchen.
For the sake of a couple of fresh or salty bites,
They crawl on roofs and walls like cats and ants.
Their beards, all year round, in pursuit of taking things,
Are left greedy at every passage.
What is the harvest of the base person but sorrow and pain?
What is a cage of sharp winds but colic?
If they hold a board under their arm for a moment,
They beat the drum of their own house.
If they listen to a lute for a single moment,
They bring down the sky with flatulence.
I would offer gratitude for them, even though
They break it a hundred times in an hour.
Its mention is testified by milk;
Indeed, shaving their mother's beard is fitting.
From their clutches and their effeminate mustaches,
Comes oppression in the sharp lower depths.
Like an ostrich when it is time to eat bread,
But like a regular bird when it is time to work.
They sigh in regret of sighing,
And they laugh in response to laughing.
The common folk are like a whirlwind,
Rising swiftly like the wind.
With a single pleasant breeze, they vanish;
They have the face of a man but a weak body.
The honor of the commoner is like fire,
Even if they are without wealth and lineage.
Wounded like a wild beast by injustice,
May neither its teeth nor its claws remain.
