سلوتی نیست روح را از کسسلوت روح خلوت آمد و بس
The soul finds no solace in anyone;
Solace for the soul is seclusion and nothing else.
دهر بد رای و خلق بد بینندراهت این است و مردمان اینند
Time is ill-willed and people are ill-sighted;
This is your path, and these are the people.
یا به خلوت به خوش دلی تن زنیا بر اینها نشین و جان می کن
Either withdraw into seclusion with a happy heart,
Or sit with them and wear out your soul.
کی فروشد خرد به رستهٔ جانآب سی ساله را به تایی نان
How would wisdom sell, in the market of the soul,
Thirty years of honor for a single loaf of bread?
مگس و گربه سوی خوان پویندسگ و زاغند کاستخوان جویند
Flies and cats run toward the dining spread;
Dogs and crows are those who seek bones.
گربه از بهر لقمه ای خواریمی کشد با خروش و با زاری
For the sake of a morsel, a cat endures humiliation
With crying out and with lamentation.
گربه از بهر لقمه جور بردببر و شیر و پلنگ خود بدرد
A cat suffers hardship for a morsel;
While the tiger, the lion, and the leopard tear their prey by themselves.
باز شیر درنده در صحراگورخر را همی درد تنها
Yet the fierce lion in the desert
Tears the wild ass all alone.
