Section 10 - He Speaks on the Description of the Beloveds

Text and Translation

What will you do with a deceitful beloved?
O you who are less than nothing, what will you do with nothing?
O you whose two almonds (eyes) are like pledged walnuts,
Left in the hollow by the hands of children.
Why do you cast to the wind, like seekers of fidelity,
Your life upon the promises of the fair-faced?
The beloveds of the age, both small and great,
Are Joseph to the eyes, but wolves to the heart.
They are calamity-laden portraits, like Chinese paintings,
Giving roses to the eyes, but thorns to the heart.
Stay away from these world-consuming charmers;
Their love is fire, and hearts are the kindling.
