Text and Translation

Whoever foolishly worships the backside in vain,
Will receive a fart as a reward from a fig.
Why would you give away your elder intellect to a young child,
For the sake of the passage of dregs?
If from its upper side is the source of evil,
Whatever entered from the lower side is it.
The price of the bad body is the soul,
While your good heart desires it for free.
When you see dust in front of you,
You become empty-handed from your own lust.
He who has cast aside his own name and reputation,
How could he ever guard or care for your heart?
A backbiting adversary of vain-talking nature,
A companion with anklets on hands and bells on feet.
A friend as ill-disposed as the hair of Africans,
Who leaps up when you pull them down in coquetry.
They are like lamps because at the time of sacrifice,
Like a wick, they feed from the base.
So that in less than one or two months of deceptive earning,
They turn their ninety into thirty out of greed.
Grieving over the broken and torn,
Is like raising a motherless child.
He spoke truly who untied the knot:
'It is better to capture a captive through good character.'
Wherever there is religion, there is no dirham;
A beautiful face and a good character do not go together.
It is ugly to abandon the good,
And to barter away a Joseph for a meager price.
Since you are neither Jacob nor Benjamin,
You will hear nothing but 'Amen' to this prayer.
To the one whose intellect is despised,
The sweetheart of the heart is a liver-devouring sugar.
