Section 82 - On Servitude
Text and Translation
| How long will you ask what servitude is? What is servitude other than humble submission? | |
| Wear His bond so that you may be a servant, Otherwise you are only fit for laughter. | |
| Those who are non-existent at His door Have not just now girded their loins at His threshold; | |
| Rather, from the mother of years and months, They were born already girded like ants. | |
| Bring all your limbs into His bond, Surrender all your wealth and belongings. | |
| Keep His bond upon all your limbs, So that you do not foolishly break away from this bond. | |
| Servitude is nothing but the path of submission; If you do not know, read of the 'sound heart'. | |
| Do not lose hold of it for the sake of your ego, No one ever gave everything to anyone for nothing. | |
| Whoever has not the eye of admonition blinded Will not be like birds, wild beasts, or pack animals. | |
| For the one who is wise through contentment, The movement of the stars is impotent. | |
| Servitude in the court of the Creator of All Is helplessness, weakness, self-abasement, and humility. | |
| It is a long cycle of enduring trials; Being a servant is far from being a nurturer of servants. | |
| When eternal wisdom becomes the cupbearer, You will choose that which is everlasting. | |
| There are a thousand and one thresholds in religion, The least of which is the one that has a path without you. | |
| If you want a body like a beehive, Cast down your shield before the arrow of destiny. | |
| Whoever is wounded by the arrow of destiny, Their wound will accept no medicine. | |
| The wound from the arrow of destiny shatters shields; No one ever escaped its strike. | |
| You will not escape, O vain meddler, From the sea, except by helplessness. | |
| Those who possess hearts familiar with the Divine Keep their hearts free from 'hows' and 'whys'. | |
| Before the blow of the arrow of His decrees, They are like prey caught in His snare. | |
| Who has written profit and loss for you? Read the command: 'Say: Nothing will befall us.' | |
| For the sake of your soul, the Divine decree Wrote at night what you read by day. | |
| Because of the 'Jeem' of ignorance and defective intellect, Your heart became narrow like the loop of the letter 'Meem'. | |
| The outward aspect of the decree reveals the inner state; The end of the decree tells of the beginning. | |
| Throw yourself into the water, for our limited Knowledge of swimming will not make the ocean familiar. | |
| When calamity descends upon you from above, Go and say 'Allah' and do not utter sighs. | |
| When the Divine decree looks toward you, Beware, quickly close the path of sighing. | |
| Lest sighing leave you bewildered, Turn sighing away from the path as well. | |
| How can your caution benefit you against destiny? Do not consume your liver in vain. | |
| Make your hand and lip under the decree of the Creator of All Like the branch of a cypress and the rosebud. | |
| Be a moth consuming itself for its master, Be a bone for its Huma bird. | |
| Accept nothing other than the Truth, Detach your heart entirely from all others. | |
| Keep your face bright like a candle before Him; Have your belt made of water and your crown of fire. | |
| You are a lamp before the exalted Sun; Give your life like it and smile happily. | |
| Surrender your life willingly, for in that court, A life held back in denial has no value. | |
| For he who draws breath with a severed head Carries the burden of His command with the light of his eyes. | |
| Without turning his head from God's command and order, He sits silently in one place. | |
| He submits to the fire: The burning brand of Nimrod and the garden of Abraham. | |
| Until you become a beggar towards your own self, God will not show His Lordship to you. | |
| Make your soul the target for the arrow of His decree; Make your faith a pearl oyster in the ocean of His love. | |
| You speak of the place of the inverted Law; Where do you seek the inverted Throne? | |
| For God knows the mystery of speech; Seek His winks and subtle hints. | |
