Section 11 - On the Condemnation of Indulging in Lust

Text and Translation

If lust turns your soul into its steed,
It will prolong your affair with idols [beauties].
Even though their faces illuminate the world,
Through greed, they tear the heart and pierce the soul.
They are all captives of their own desires,
Lovers before them are all idol-worshippers.
In pursuit of the dregs of the spirits,
Their eyes have breached the souls.
They strip away the honor of Jamshid's dominion,
With those two tresses and two deeply curved eyebrows.
Upon their cheeks, their tresses bear witness,
That they are not human or fairy; they are snakes.
They are all demons, yet they presume,
That they possess the honor of heavenly houris.
They are snakes with tresses, a deceitful bunch,
Poison in their fangs, with no antidote bead in their heads.
Having made locks from their curled tresses,
For the sake of deception and the seduction of the wealthy,
A hundred thousand keys with chains,
All gathered on a face like the shining full moon.
The twisted lock is a soul-severer,
The curled tress is the ghoul of the heart.
One of these beauties, out of reproach,
Will bend the back of sorrow through plunder.
