Section 11 - On the Creation of the World

Text and Translation

For the sake of finitude in creation,
The world of bodies came to be round.
Equally structured like a sphere,
Not differing one side from another.
The world is extended, and within bounds,
The finite dimension was extended.
After that, in the dominion of shaping,
Know the rank of the form and the form-receiver.
From the beginning of the soul to the end of the coral,
Active and passive are between these two.
In the abode of attributes susceptible to annihilation,
For the sake of raising castles and structures,
The intellect sits bound by the command,
The soul, in desire for intellect, is heartsick.
Form is in bondage for the sake of matter,
The nine heavens in the grip of seven lassos.
And from within the sphere, four jewels,
All in bondage and enemies to each other.
The three realms from these four elements:
Like plants, and minerals, and animals.
When a plant became food for the animal,
The animal also became food for the human.
When human speech became food for the angel,
By this path it returned to the heavens.
Otherwise, in the world of certainty and doubt,
The donkey would remain the same, and the sage the same.
Beautiful speech is better than silence,
Otherwise, forgetfulness in the soul is better.
In speech, you must pierce pearls,
Otherwise, muteness is better than speaking.
A mute with little voice in speech,
Is better than a talkative, vain babbler.
Your intellect gave you solid advice,
Either speak well or be mute.
If you had accepted the advice,
When would you have turned grace into meddling?
