Section 13 - On the Mention of the Sensory Faculties and Memory

Text and Translation

The soul, which keeps you alive,
Has much work to do in your body without you.
Even though those five watchmen [external senses] are idle,
Three deputies within you remain awake.
One digests and another distributes,
One removes the dregs and another places the bounty.
One shows the path, another devises plans,
This one acts as preserver [memory], that one interprets.
Do you not see that when you go to sleep,
You become free from trouble and torment?
For the sake of your leisure and sleep,
And for the sake of your well-being and affairs,
In this earthly abode of fire and wind,
Your earthly nature has carried away your honor.
So that upon the throne of the secret of intellect,
It seats you for your own comfort.
You are at rest and the intellect is at work;
You are asleep, yet within you, it is awake.
