Section 83 - The Allegory of the Story of Abraham, the Friend [of God], Peace Be Upon Him

Text and Translation

Did you hear what the Friend (Abraham) said,
When he hid [his state] from Gabriel at the time of the fire?
He put his head out from the window of the soul,
Saying, 'O brother, step aside from between [us].'
He spoke secretly with Gabriel,
While making 'My Lord, make it easy' in the difficult matter.
Being released from the catapult of decree,
Revolving like a ball in the air.
[Gabriel] said, 'Then I am the guide of your path;
I am Gabriel who is your well-wisher.'
In such a state, with the awe of the Friend,
Out of trust and protection of the Guardian (God),
[Abraham] said, 'Although my foot, O beloved,
Is bound on the neck of the weak,
Keep yourself away from me for a moment,
So that without you, I may draw a breath with Him.
Is His protection not enough of a guide for me?
Is His knowledge not enough of a Gabriel for me?
Without you, be present at His threshold;
Fix your eyes and then watch.
Step aside with your own share from between,
So that you may find the sweetness of faith.'
When by love, fire leapt from your plane tree,
Fire will withhold its hand from fire.
When the Friend left that self of his,
The fire withheld its hand from its action.
Though Nimrod kindled a fire,
His fire did not burn, as it found no grass.
When he surrendered the reins to the hand of decree,
The thirty-eight-day fire died.
There blossomed from the midst of fire and smoke,
When he heard the sound of the call of Truth,
The narcissus of the covenant and the lily of realization,
The hyacinth of the tradition and the rose of success.
Yes, yes, when the Friend is that,
The fire of Nimrod becomes a garden.
