Section 35 - The Allegory on Gratitude for the Guidance of Islam
Text and Translation
| One day Umar was sitting alone, With the People of the Bench gathered around him in grief and pain. | |
| Each of them, out of the joy of the path of Islam, Was speaking openly, remembering their past. | |
| Both the old elder and the fresh youth, Had raised their voices to the gateway. | |
| They were all remembering the favor of guidance, Grieving over the lost days of disbelief. | |
| Abdullah, the son of Umar, was present, But he was deficient in experiencing that pain and suffering. | |
| He too mentioned a favor upon himself, Whereupon Umar quickly opened his tongue against him. | |
| He said, 'Woe to you! What boasting do you scatter? How do you relate to this pain? | |
| How far does your pain for religion go? How could pain be fitting for you? | |
| You were born and raised in Islam, Having never tasted the bitterness of disbelief. | |
| You have not suffered the pain of the days of disbelief, Nor have you made yourself humble and abased. | |
| We are the ones who know such pain and wounds, And that is why we rejoice in the religion of the Messenger. | |
| Without having tasted the pain, the favor, and the shame, Without having suffered any abasement and contempt, | |
| How can you know the sweetness of faith? How do you know the value of faith and virtue? | |
| We know what abasement that was, And what fetters and what chains those were. | |
| We know how to give thanks for Islam, For now we are men of the path of faith. | |
| The brave lions endured the hardship of the way, And handed this path over to you unmanly ones. | |
| Through your unmanliness, this path of religion— You have completely ruined the tradition. | |
| With what answer shall I leave you for the Beloved, O you through whom religion and law have been ruined? | |
| You are neither a woman on the path of truth, nor a man, Nor even a hermaphrodite, which is why you have no pain.' | |
