Section 54 - The Allegory Regarding the Condition of the Ignorant Astrologer in the Presence of the Wise King

Text and Translation

There was once a foolish astrologer,
Blind, like the people of the age.
A king called him into service,
And sat him before himself time and again.
The king asked him a question,
Posing a difficulty to him in an impossible way.
The king was wise and world-seeing,
His outward and inward state was full of faith.
He said, 'Choose a day for yourself,
Go look at the almanac for your own state.
Find that moment when your perfection is complete,
When the ominous star is in detriment,
When your ascendant is in full honor,
And your state is revealed to you.
When no misfortune is apparent to you,
Rise and come to me with a joyful heart,
So that I may give you a fitting robe of honor,
And that your poverty and need may be lessened.'
The foolish man went and chose a day,
And did not see what the king's true purpose was.
One morning, he came to the king early,
Thinking there was no day better than that.
When the king saw the man so joyful,
He opened a hundred doors of pain and grief upon him.
He said, 'Behead him immediately,
And drag him away bound from my presence.'
The executioner dragged him away,
Took him and cut off his head in that very moment.
He did not know a good day from a bad one;
Imitation was his leader, not intellect.
