Section 38 - The Tale of the Oppressor and the Oppressed

Text and Translation

A child said to an unfair opponent,
"O you who are entirely deceit and contradiction!
You are tall and also reach far,
Thus it is better that you play walnuts less."
On this highway of fear and hope,
The wet nurse of your body is the White Demon.
Night and day, in pursuit of food for your body,
The breast of the demon remains in your mouth.
For your ruin-seeking desire
Will blacken the tip of the breast before you.
Where is a mother who, out of compassion,
Knows how to wean her child from milk?
Although drinking the milk of the breast of heedlessness
Made your neck thick like the base of a walnut tree.
Suddenly you will see from the garden door,
Death arrives and blackens the breast.
Drinking milk prolongs your hope,
Your death will break your habit of milk.
The heart drinks its milk like a cow eating bran,
Before the commoner, like a hypocritical ascetic.
Break the habit of drinking too much milk,
Cut off your greed from the cow's milk.
On the bridge, what is the desire of the heart?
In the house of danger, what is insolence?
The clay which Iblis was ashamed of,
You have embraced tightly like religion.
As a human, your Qibla is intellect and religion,
You are not a plant whose Qibla is clay.
If you are not an apprentice to ignorance,
You will be victorious over every desire.
Sever the heart from clay if you have certainty,
Remove hatred from the heart if you have religion.
If you are in the realm of danger night and day,
With intellect like a child playing with walnuts.
You strove for the house of the owl,
You covered it with plaster, stone, and painting.
The year of the flood, and the house disturbed,
You in it, sometimes drunk and sometimes asleep.
Is it not that when it rains like hail,
It will bring the house down upon your head?
Day and night, occasionally and untimely from the rain,
Unaware of the waterway and the gutter.
When the flood takes you away on a journey,
The painting and plaster will laugh at you thereafter.
In the shop of deceit and trickery,
Iblis has found you an easy prey.
By your own hand in this foundation,
Your foot remained in the mud and your head in the wind.
From Him is command and prohibition, and 'bring' and 'do not bring',
From you is the thicket, life is the tool.
Whatever profit comes, He takes it rightly,
And whatever is loss, is from your capital.
Not having taken light from religion as a bribe,
You have become a free laborer for the demon.
