The State of Sultan Mahmud in the Other World
Text and Translation
| There was a pure-minded man upon the path of righteousness, One night he saw 'Mahmud' in a dream. | |
| He said: 'O king of good fortune! How is your state in the Abode of Permanence?' | |
| He replied: 'Be silent, do not spill the blood of my soul, Breathe not a word, what place is this for a king? Arise! | |
| My kingship was but an illusion and a mistake, How can kingship befit a handful of worthless dust? | |
| The Truth (God) is the sovereign who holds the world, Kingship is worthy only of Him. | |
| When I saw my own helplessness and bewilderment, I feel ashamed of my own kingship. | |
| If you call me, call me nothing but distressed, He is the King, do not call me a king. | |
| Kingship belongs to Him, and I would have profited, If I had lived in beggary in the world. | |
| Would that there had been a hundred pits, but no worldly rank, Would that I had been a street sweeper and not a king. | |
| There is no way out for me at this moment, They are demanding an account from me for every single grain of barley. | |
| May the wings and feathers of that Huma wither away, That gave me a place within its shadow.' | |
