The Tale of the Mother Whose Child Fell into the Water
Text and Translation
| A mother's child fell into the water, The mother's soul fell into a fever and agitation. | |
| In bewilderment, the child was flailing hands and feet, The water carried him to the channel of the mill. | |
| He was about to enter the mill race when the mother saw it, She went to the water gate and immediately drew the water back. | |
| The water receded, and that beloved child, Upon that water, also went backward. | |
| His mother jumped in, picked him up, Gave him milk immediately, and embraced him. | |
| O You who out of compassion gave the love of mothers, There is a heavy mill race for this whirlpool. | |
| When we fall into that whirlpool of bewilderment, We fall before the mill race of the water of regret. | |
| Left wandering and bewildered like that child in the water, We flail our hands and feet out of anxiety. | |
| At that moment, O compassionate one of the children of the path, By Your grace, look upon Your drowning one. | |
| Show mercy to our agitated heart, By Your grace and bounty, pull us out of our water. | |
| Give us milk from the breast of bounty, Do not remove the table of bounty from before us. | |
| O You who have come beyond description and comprehension, Who have come pure from the attributes of describers. | |
| No one's hand has reached Your saddle-strap, Consequently, we are the dust of Your dust. | |
| Your dust became Your pure companions, The people of the world became the dust of Your dust. | |
| Whoever is not dust for Your companions Is an enemy to those who love You. | |
| First of them Abu Bakr, and last Morteza, The four pillars of the Kaaba of truth and purity. | |
| That one in truth is the confidant and minister, And the other in justice is the bright sun. | |
| That one is the ocean of modesty and shame, And the other is the king of possessors of knowledge and generosity. | |
