The Tale of Adam Being Driven Out of Paradise

Text and Translation

A disciple asked the master,
"Why did Adam fall out of Paradise?"
He said, "Adam was indeed of high essence;
When he bowed his head to a paradise,
A hidden caller raised a loud voice:
'Oh, paradise has bound you in a hundred ways!
Whoever in both worlds, outside of Us,
Bows his head to something lower than Us,
We will bring destruction upon it, whatever it is;
Because one cannot reach out to other than the Friend.
There may be a hundred thousand places before the Beloved;
What use is a place without the Beloved?
Whoever becomes alive to anything but the Beloved,
Even if he is Adam, he will be cast down.'
Such news came to the people of Paradise,
That the first thing they are given there is liver.
Since the people of Paradise are not the people of the secret,
Therefore, they resume eating liver (suffering)."
