Text and Translation

The Prophet said, to test her: "He does not see you, do not hide so much."
Aisha gestured with her hands: "He does not see, but I see him."
This is the jealousy of the intellect over the beauty of the spirit; this sincere advice is full of metaphors and parables.
With such concealment that belongs to the spirit, why is the intellect so jealous of it?
From whom are you hiding, O jealous-natured one? The one whose face is veiled by his own light!
This sun goes forth without a veil; the sheer abundance of its light is the veil upon its face.
From whom are you hiding, O jealous one, when even the sun sees no trace of him?
The jealousy within me is greater than that, for I wish to hide him even from himself.
From the heavy fire of jealousy, I am at war with my own two eyes and ears.
Since you have such jealousy, O heart and soul, then close your mouth and abandon speaking.
I fear that if I stay silent, that sun will rend the veil from another direction.
In silence, our speech becomes more manifest, for by being forbidden, desire increases.
If the sea roars, its roar turns to foam; the boiling of 'I loved to be known' becomes known.
To speak letters is to close that window; the very expression of speech is an act of covering.
Cry out like a nightingale before the rose, so that you may distract them from the rose's scent.
So their ears are occupied with your words, and their minds do not fly toward the face of the rose.
Before this sun, which is exceedingly bright, in truth, every proof is but a highway robber.
