دفتر ششم - بخش ۸۳ - جواب گفتن مسلمان آنچ دید به یارانش جهود و ترسا و حسرت خوردن ایشان / Book Six - Section 83 - The Muslim Answering His Companions, the Jew and the Christian, Regarding What He Saw, and Their Regret

Text and Translation

Then the Muslim said, 'O my companions,
Mustafa, my Sultan, came before me.
Then he said to me, That one galloped up to Mount Sinai,
And played the backgammon of love with the Interlocutor of God.
And the other, Jesus, the Lord of the Conjunction,
Bore him to the zenith of the fourth heaven.
Arise, O left-behind one who has suffered loss!
At least eat that halva and meat-stew.
Those artful ones full of cunning rode away,
They read the book of fortune and high office.
Those two learned men attained their excellence,
They wove their art with the angels.
O simple, foolish, left-behind one, beware!
Spring up and sit at the bowl of halva.'
Then they said to him, 'Then you, being greedy,
O wonder, did you eat of the halva and the sweetmeat?'
He said, 'Since that obeyed King commanded,
Who was I to refuse it?
Would you, a Jew, turn your head from the command of Moses,
Whether he calls you in joy or in sorrow?
Would you, a Christian, ever turn your head from the command of the Messiah,
In good and in evil?
How should I turn my head away from the Pride of the Prophets?
I have eaten the halva and at this moment I am overjoyed.'
Then they said to him, 'By Allah, it is a true dream
That you have seen, and this is better than a hundred of our dreams.
Your dream is wakefulness, O conceited one,
For its effect is manifest in wakefulness.'
Pass beyond excellence, striving, and cunning!
The real matter is in service and good character.
For this reason God brought us forth:
I did not create mankind except to worship Me.
What did that art profit the Samaritan?
For that cunning made him rejected from the gate of God.
What did Qarun gain from alchemy? See,
How the earth swallowed him into its depths.
What, in the end, did Abu l-Hakam gain from his art?
He went headlong into Hell because of his unbelief.
True art belongs to him who saw the fire plainly,
Not the prattle 'smoke is the proof of fire'.
O you whose proof is more foul in the eyes of the wise
In reality, than the proof of that physician!
Since your proof is nothing but this, O son,
Eat dung and look in the urine!
O your proof is like that blind man's staff,
In your hand, it points to the defect of blindness.
Tumult and hubbub and arrogance and battle,
Saying, I do not see, hold me excused.'
