Text and Translation

There was a very old, ninety-year-old woman,
Her face full of wrinkles and her complexion like saffron.
Like the surface of a tablecloth, her cheeks were folded layer upon layer,
Yet the desire for a husband still remained within her.
Her teeth had fallen out, and her hair had turned white as milk,
Her stature was bowed like an arch, and all her senses had altered.
Her desire for a husband, her lust, and her greed were complete;
A love of the hunt, yet her net was torn to shreds!
An untimely bird, and treading a pathless way;
A blazing fire beneath an empty pot.
In love with the battlefield and the steed, yet possessing no feet;
In love with the flute and the lips, yet possessing no reed.
May even the Jews not suffer such greed in old age!
O wretched one to whom God has given such greed!
When a dog grows old, its teeth fall out,
It ceases to bite people and settles for dung.
Look at these sixty-year-old dogs!
At every moment, their canine teeth grow sharper.
The old dog's fur has fallen from its pelt;
Behold these old dogs clothed in satin!
Their lust and greed for sex and gold,
See it multiply breath by breath, like the breeding of dogs.
Such a life, which is the very capital of Hell,
Is a slaughterhouse for the butchers of divine wrath.
When people say to them, 'May your life be long!'
They become delighted, their mouths opening in a smile.
They mistake such a curse for a blessing;
They do not open their eyes, nor do they raise their heads.
If they had seen but a single hair of the Hereafter,
They would have replied, 'May your life be exactly like this!'
