Section 25 - Parable

Text and Translation

The poor owl sat beside the falcon;
When they make them fly from there,
The falcon makes its home in the king's palace,
The owl flies to the corner of a ruin.
Everyone's inclination is towards their dwelling,
The face of every bird is towards its nest.
When they see it fit,
The Sufis sit back from the Sama',
The kitchen servant brings to the middle,
To feed the group, the tablecloth and the tray.
A tablecloth full of forbidden things,
Everything in it is anything but permissible.
Its bread is from the wheat that the city's police chief,
Has taken by force from the poor of the village.
The meat is from that desert sheep,
That the plundering Turk has stolen.
In its forbidden nature, from what I have revealed,
A hundred times more are the other ingredients of the soup.
The money for the halva and the cost of the paloodeh,
Has been given by the polluted and sinful.
The fruit is from the orchard of widows,
Plucked from there by force by the fruit-pickers.
The sheikh and his friends, out of lust and greed,
When they reach out their hands to the tablecloth,
Gluttony blocks their path in such a way,
That they forget to say Bismillah.
One of them is seized by anxiety,
To eat more than his table companion.
He chews his morsel little out of haste,
Commanding his stomach to do the work of the teeth.
And the other secretly watches,
Counting his morsels and his spoons.
If he makes a mistake in the count of the spoons,
He says a thousand kinds of abuses to him:
'That which you did was against the Sunnah,
Repent from going against the Sunnah quickly!'
He reveals his stinginess and miserliness,
But makes the Sunnah his excuse.
Another one, out of a deceitful soul, places
Morsel after morsel in his sleeve and armpit,
Saying, 'As a blessing from the table of the dervishes,
I take this for the house and relatives.
This morsel is the source of blessings,
Whoever eats this morsel finds salvation.'
This is the requirement of his base nature,
But he deceives those present.
When they fill their bellies with soup and bread,
They remove the tablecloth from the middle.
The sheikh, for the spiritual openings of the special group,
Recites Al-Fatiha, and then Al-Ikhlas.
But that recitation, out of pride and hypocrisy,
Does not go higher than their mustaches.
The wind of their breaths from a ruined soul,
When it does not find a way upward,
Becomes the stench of a curse and descends,
Soiling their mustaches and their beards.
When 'Idha ta'imtum' (When you have eaten) shows its face,
They act upon the command 'fantasheru' (disperse).
All with stuffed stomachs,
All with scattered minds.
They place their drum-like bellies forward,
And set their faces towards their sleeping places.
Neither a spark from the lights of their dhikr,
Nor a trace from the state of their sama'.
The result of their dhikr is pain in the neck and head,
The effect of their dancing is weakness in the back and waist.
Their eating, too, gives no fresh result,
Other than sleep and yawning.
Their pure companionship, supposedly from truth and harmony,
Is the source of a hundred thousand lies and hypocrisy.
Take the next day by this analogy,
There is no need for me to elaborate.
Day and night, their work and profession is like this;
Alas, if it always passes like this!
Save us, O Lord, from our deceitfulness,
And protect us from the evils of our souls,
Then from the bad deeds,
That arise from the flaws of circumstances.
