بخش ۳۵ - امام شافعی گفت عمری گرد صوفیه گردیدم از ایشان دو سخن پسندیده شنیدم. یکی آنکه الوقت سیف قاطع و دیگر آنکه ان من العصمة ان لا تقدر / Section 35 - Imam Shafi'i said, 'I spent a lifetime around the Sufis and heard two pleasing sayings from them. One is that Time is a cutting sword and the other is that Indeed, part of protection from sin is not having the power to commit it.'

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

شاه دین شافعی مطلبیگفت عمری پی خدا طلبی
The King of Religion, Shafi'i of Muttalib descent,
Said, 'For a lifetime, seeking God,
کرده ام طوف گرد درویشاننکته ای دو شنیده ام زیشان
I have circumambulated the dervishes,
I have heard a point or two from them,
هر دو پاکیزه و پسندیدهبه ترازوی عقل سنجیده
Both pure and pleasing,
Weighed in the balance of intellect.
وقت را گفته اند تیغ برانکه بود بی توقفی گذران
They have called time a cutting sword,
Which passes by without pausing.
هر کجا تیز بگذرد چون تیغوانگردد به وای وای و دریغ
Wherever it passes sharply like a sword,
It does not return with wailing and regret.
گرچه باشد گذشتش نفسیلیک تاثیر او قویست بسی
Although its passing is but a breath,
Yet its effect is very strong.
اثرش بر دلی که می آیدابدالابدین همی پاید
Its effect on the heart that receives it,
Endures for all eternity.
جهد کن کان اثر چنان باشدکه تو را آرزوی جان باشد
Strive that this effect may be such,
That it becomes the desire of your soul.
قاطع از بهر دشمن است این سیفتو کشی دوست حیف باشد حیف
This sword is cutting for the sake of the enemy,
If you kill a friend, it is a pity, a pity!
تیغ در دست توست دشمن کشخاصه آن را که هست دشمن هش
The sword is in your hand, kill the enemy,
Especially the one who is the enemy of awareness.
هش چه چیزی است آگهی ز خدادشمن هش کدام نفس و هوا
What is awareness? Knowledge of God.
Which is the enemy of awareness? The ego (nafs) and desire.
نفس تو دشمن درونی تومابقی دشمن برونی تو
Your nafs is your internal enemy,
The rest are your external enemies.
گر شود دشمن درونی نیستباکی از دشمن برونی نیست
If the internal enemy is annihilated,
There is no fear of the external enemy.
نفس اگر نیست در درون باقیچه غم از دشمنان آفاقی
If the nafs does not remain inside,
What sorrow is there from worldly enemies?
بلکه آفاقیان همه یارندبا تو آیین دوستی دارند
Rather, all people of the world are friends,
They have the custom of friendship with you.
گرچه در قصد مال و جاه تواندهمه مانع کشان راه تواند
Although they may aim for your wealth and status,
They all remove obstacles from your path.
هست در راه فقر مصطفیمال و جاه تو مانعان قوی
On the path of Mustafa's poverty,
Your wealth and status are strong obstacles.
لیک از نفس بی مروت تودفع ایشان چو نیست قوت تو
But from your merciless nafs,
Since you do not have the strength to repel them,
لطف حق دیگری برانگیزدکه به یک حمله خونشان ریزد
The grace of Truth rouses another,
To spill their blood with a single attack.
تا تو آسوده راه حق سپریهر چه جز راه حق ازان گذری
So that you may comfortably tread the path of Truth,
And pass over whatever is other than the path of Truth.
ظاهرا گرچه خصم و بدکار استدر حقیقت تو را مددگار است
Outwardly, although he is an enemy and evildoer,
In truth, he is your helper.
وان که با نفس تو چه صبح و چه شاممی نهد گام سعی در پی کام
And the one who, with your nafs, whether morning or evening,
Takes steps of effort in pursuit of desire,
گر به صورت همی نماید دوستبه حقیقت عدوی جان تو اوست
Although in appearance he seems a friend,
In truth, he is the enemy of your soul.'
