Text and Translation

Our Sheikh, out of clamor and commotion, strikes up
A morning cry and a nighttime shout.
He recites the litanies of the morning party,
He considers himself the party of Truth.
His head full of arrogance and his heart full of conceit,
His face towards the people and his back to the prayer niche.
A herd of donkeys has lined up around him,
Casting an uproar into the city.
What is this? The Sheikh is reciting dhikr,
Washing away the pollution of heedlessness with dhikr.
Suddenly, a little man ran through the door,
Putting his head to the ear of the Sheikh and his companions,
Saying that a certain master or emir has arrived,
A lover and disciple of his eminence the Sheikh.
The Sheikh and his companions lost control,
They became drunk from the wine of pride.
The dhikr took on such a loud tone,
That the people were distressed by it.
Their insides, from lip to navel, became dry
From the roof-splitting wails of the reciters of dhikr.
That one brought foam to his mouth,
And slapped himself with his own hand.
And the other one tore the collar of his cloak,
Heaving painful sighs at every moment.
And another one, with false weeping and wailing,
Started to shed fake tears.
Anyone who saw that weeping said:
'This is a lie without a doubt.'
A few cold ones have made themselves hot,
Having no shame before the Creator nor before the creations.
When the Sheikh brings the dhikr to a close,
He turns to the arena of discourse.
He speaks of unveiling and inspiration,
He tells the difference between state and station.
The secret of detachment and the point of monotheism,
He speaks of, but mixed with imitation.
He boasts of true realization, but
The custom of imitation exposes him to disgrace.
