عشق چیست از قطره دریا ساختنعقل نعل کفش سودا ساختن
What is love? Making a sea out of a drop,
Making the intellect the horseshoe of the shoe of madness.
فکر چیست اسرار کلی حل شدنکوه کندن در دل خردل شدن
What is thought? Resolving all mysteries,
Digging a mountain to enter the heart of a mustard seed.
ذوق چیست آگاه معنی آمدننه بتقوی نه بفتوی آمدن
What is spiritual taste? Becoming aware of meaning,
Arriving neither by piety nor by a fatwa.
صحو چیست از خود بخود ره یافتنپس زخود خود را منزه یافتن
What is sobriety? Finding the way from oneself to oneself,
Then finding oneself purified from oneself.
محو چیست ازخویش بی خویش آمدنپس ز هر دو نیز درویش آمدن
What is effacement? Coming out of oneself without oneself,
Then becoming destitute of both.
وجد چیست از صبح صادق خوش شدنبی حضور آفتاب آتش شدن
What is rapture? Becoming joyful from the true dawn,
Becoming fire without the presence of the sun.
فقد چیست از صبح با شام آمدنهم ز عشق خویش در دام آمدن
What is loss? Coming from morning with the evening,
And falling into a trap from one's own love.
عیب چیست از عین پرده ساختنخویشتن را زنده مرده ساختن
What is a flaw? Making a veil out of the essence,
Making oneself a living dead.
شکر چیست از خار گل پنداشتنجزو را نادیده کل پنداشتن
What is gratitude? Considering the thorn a rose,
Considering the part as the whole without seeing it.
عین چیست آئینه خویش آمدنخویش را بی خویش در پیش آمدن
What is the essence? Becoming the mirror of oneself,
Encountering oneself without oneself.
شوق چیست از خویش بیرون آمدنبر امید مشک در خون آمدن
What is yearning? Coming out of oneself,
Coming into blood in hope of musk.
لطف چیست از ذرهٔ ذره شدنعذر کمتر ذره را غره شدن
What is grace? Becoming a speck of a speck,
Becoming proud of the apology of a lesser speck.
قهر چیست ازمور پیل انگاشتنپشهٔ را جبرئیل انگاشتن
What is wrath? Imagining an ant as an elephant,
Imagining a mosquito as Gabriel.
بسط چیست از هردو عالم سر زدنخویش بر صد عالم دیگر زدن
What is expansion? Rearing the head from both worlds,
Casting oneself upon a hundred other worlds.
قبض چیست ازجان و دل تن ساختنخانه در سوراخ سوزن ساختن
What is contraction? Making a body out of soul and heart,
Making a house in the eye of a needle.
قرب چیست اندر بر آتش شدنیا چو پروانه شدن تا خوش شدن
What is proximity? Entering the embrace of fire,
Or becoming like a moth to become joyful.
بعد چیست ازجسم جان انگاشتنقعر دوزخ آسمان انگاشتن
What is distance? Imagining the soul from the body,
Imagining the bottom of hell as heaven.
خوف چیست از امن آزاد آمدندر بهشت عدن ناشاد آمدن
What is fear? Becoming free from security,
Becoming unhappy in the Garden of Eden.
عمر چیست از مرگ بیرون زیستنمرگ از پس کردن اکنون زیستن
What is life? Living beyond death,
Putting death behind and living in the now.
عیش چیست از زندگی مرده شدنپیش هر دردی پس پرده شدن
What is pleasure? Becoming dead from life,
Retreating behind the veil before every pain.
وقت چیست از یک سر موی آمدنصد بلا چون موی در روی آمدن
What is the moment? Coming from the tip of a single hair,
A hundred calamities coming to the face like hair.
حال چیست از نفس متواری شدنپس به استقبال جباری شدن
What is the state? Hiding from the carnal soul,
Then going to welcome the Almighty.
راه چیست از جان پناهی یافتنگنج را دزدیده راهی یافتن
What is the path? Finding a refuge from the soul,
Finding a way having stolen the treasure.
سیر چیست از جزو خود بیرون شدنذرهگی بگذاشتن گردون شدن
What is the journey? Going out of one's part,
Leaving atom-hood and becoming the firmament.
حب چیست از پیش جان برخاستنپیش جانان جان فشان برخاستن
What is affection? Rising from before the soul,
Rising before the Beloved, offering the soul.
انس چیست از خود رهائی یافتندر سویدا آشنائی یافتن
What is intimacy? Finding liberation from oneself,
Finding familiarity in the black core of the heart.
مهر چیست از سنگ پستان ساختنطفل خود را هر دو کیهان ساختن
What is kindness? Making breasts out of stone,
Making both universes one's own child.
وصل چیست از نیستی هست آمدنپس ازین هر دو برون مست آمدن
What is union? Coming to existence from non-existence,
Then coming out of both, intoxicated.
نفخه چیست از لا هو الا هو شدنپس دو عالم ناف یک آهو شدن
What is the breath? Becoming from 'there is no god but He',
Then both worlds becoming the navel of one deer.
شرح چیست از غش بتحقیق آمدنموی را چون قرع و انبیق آمدن
What is explanation? Coming from adulteration to realization,
The hair becoming like a gourd and alembic.
شرم چیست از لطف ناآمیختنسایهٔ خود دیدن و بگریختن
What is shame? Not mixing out of grace,
Seeing one's own shadow and fleeing.
چاره چیست از بود نابود آمدنپس بهیچ از جمله خشنود آمدن
What is the remedy? Coming to non-existence from existence,
Then becoming content with nothing from everything.
جهد چیست از دیده دریا ریختندر روش از آب گرد انگیختن
What is effort? Pouring a sea from the eyes,
In walking, raising dust from the water.
جذبه چیست از یک نظر ذره شدنبر پر جبریل بر سدره شدن
What is attraction? Becoming a speck from a single glance,
Getting on Gabriel's wing to the Lote Tree.
جود چیست از جمله با هیچ آمدنهیچ را فی الجمله بی پیچ آمدن
What is generosity? Coming from all to nothing,
Nothing coming without complexity in all.
عدل چیست انصاف خود را خواستنهیچ انصاف از کسی ناخواستن
What is justice? Wanting fairness for oneself,
Not wanting any fairness from anyone.
فضل چیست اسرار را محرم شدنتا ابد جان پیش صورت کم شدن
What is grace (favor)? Becoming intimate with secrets,
The soul becoming less than the form for eternity.
ذوق چیست از وعده شبنم داشتنچشم بر دریای اعظم داشتن
What is taste? Having dew from the promise,
Having the eye on the supreme sea.
امر چیست از بندگی جان داشتنذره ذره محو فرمان داشتن
What is the command? Having a soul from servitude,
Having every speck effaced in the command.
نهی چیست از درد در دیر آمدنغیر دیدن در ولا غیر آمدن
What is prohibition? Coming to the monastery from pain,
Seeing others and coming in friendship with others.
حسن چیست از رشح سرگردان شدندر رخ انموذجی حیران شدن
What is beauty? Becoming bewildered by a trickle,
Becoming amazed at the face of a model.
قبح چیست آئینه را پشت آمدناز همه تن با یک انگشت آمدن
What is ugliness? Becoming the back of the mirror,
Coming with one finger from the whole body.
نفع چیست از شمع کار آموختنجمله را افروختن خود سوختن
What is benefit? Learning the work from the candle,
Igniting everything and burning oneself.
صبر چیست آتش مزاجی داشتنسوختن مردن همه بگذاشتن
What is patience? Having a fiery temperament,
Burning, dying, leaving everything behind.
جد چیست از جان وفادار آمدنبس بیک یک موی در کار آمدن
What is earnestness? Coming loyal from the soul,
Coming into work with just one single hair.
هزل چیست آب فراست ریختنیا گلابی بر نجاست ریختن
What is jest? Spilling the water of sagacity,
Or pouring rosewater on impurity.
سهو چیست از پرده بر در ماندنزیر باران خفتن و تر ماندن
What is oversight? Remaining at the door from the veil,
Sleeping under the rain and remaining wet.
حلم چیست از ذروهٔ عرش آمدنگاو و ماهی را بهم فرش آمدن
What is forbearance? Coming from the summit of the throne,
The cow and fish becoming a carpet together.
توبه چیست اینجمله را درهم زدنخیمه زین عالم بدان عالم زدن
What is repentance? Striking all these together,
Pitching the tent from this world to that world.
سجده چیست از ننگ خود در گل شدندر دل گل عرش جان حاصل شدن
What is prostration? Going into the mud from one's own disgrace,
Obtaining the throne of the soul in the heart of the mud.
قصد چیست از دیده کوری ساختنمردمک سوراخ موری ساختن
What is intention? Making blindness from the eyes,
Making the pupil the hole of an ant.
حج چیست از پا و سر بیرون شدنکعبهٔ دل جستن و در خون شدن
What is pilgrimage? Going out of foot and head,
Seeking the Kaaba of the heart and entering blood.
عفو چیست آزار جان برداشتنجرم خلقان جرم خود پنداشتن
What is forgiveness? Enduring the torment of the soul,
Considering the sins of people as one's own sin.
کبر چیست آبی بهاون کوفتنوز منی بر دوست و دشمن کوفتن
What is pride? Pounding water in a mortar,
And pounding on friend and foe out of ego.
عجب چیست آهن ز گرمی سوختندیو را ابلیستی آموختن
What is conceit? Iron burning from heat,
Teaching devilry to the demon.
جنگ چیست از جان عنانی داشتنهر سر موئی سنانی داشتن
What is war? Having reins from the soul,
Having a spear at every hair's tip.
صلح چیست از ذات خود پنهان شدنسایه گشتن نیک و بد یکسان شدن
What is peace? Becoming hidden from one's own essence,
Becoming a shadow, good and bad becoming the same.
خشم چیست از خود خیالی داشتندوزخی را بر سفالی داشتن
What is anger? Having an illusion of oneself,
Having a hell on a potsherd.
کینه چیست از سینه زندان کردنستاژدها در حقه پنهان کردنست
What is grudge? It is making a prison out of the chest,
It is hiding a dragon in a casket.
بخل چیست از تشنگی جان دادنستهمچو بوتیمار بحر افتادنست
What is stinginess? It is giving up the soul from thirst,
It is falling into the sea like a heron.
جبن چیست از سایهٔ پژمردنستچون شکوفه از دمی افسردنست
What is cowardice? It is withering from a shadow,
It is wilting from a breath like a blossom.
مکر چیست از زهر حلوا کردنستوانگه آن حلوا ز سودا خوردنست
What is deceit? It is making halva out of poison,
And then eating that halva out of madness.
امن چیست از جان طمع ببریدنستخویش را چون سایه بیجان دیدنست
What is safety? It is cutting off greed from the soul,
It is seeing oneself lifeless like a shadow.
ذل چیست از نفس پاک افتادنستزیر پای سگ چو خاک افتادنست
What is abasement? It is falling away from the pure soul,
It is falling like dirt under a dog's foot.
عز چیست از نیک خود گردیدنستدر معز خویش خود را دیدنست
What is glory? It is turning away from one's own good,
It is seeing oneself in one's Glorifier.
صدق چیست در راستی به بودنستدر کمانی سر بسر زه بودنست
