مار افسایی یکی حربه بدستکرده بد بر مار سوراخی نشست
A snake-charmer, a weapon in hand,
Had sat down by a snake's hole.
هر زمان میساخت معجونی دگرهر نفس میخواند افسونی دگر
Every moment he prepared a different potion,
Every breath he recited a different incantation.
ناگهی عیسی برانجا درگذشتمار آمد پیش او در سر گذشت
Suddenly, Jesus passed by that place;
The snake came to him and recounted its tale.
گفت ای روح الله ای شمع انامهست سیصد سال عمر من تمام
It said, 'O Spirit of God, O candle of mankind,
My life is a full three hundred years;
مرد سی ساله مرا افسون کندتا زسوراخم مگر بیرون کند
A thirty-year-old man is charming me
To see if he can draw me out of my hole.'
رفت عیسی عاقبت زانجایگاهچون دگر باره فرود آمد براه
Eventually, Jesus departed from that place;
When he once again returned by that road,
مرد را گفتا چه کردی کار راگفت اندر سله کردم مار را
He said to the man, 'What did you do with the task?'
He said, 'I have put the snake in the basket.'
شد سر آن سله عیسی برگرفتچون بدید او را سخن از سرگرفت
Jesus went and lifted the lid of that basket;
When he saw it, he resumed the conversation.
گفت ای مار از چه طاعت داشتیخاصه چندانی شجاعت داشتی
He said, 'O snake, why did you obey?
Especially since you possessed such bravery?
آن همه دعوی که کردی از نخستاز چه افتادی چنین در دام سست
All those claims you made at first—
Why did you fall so weakly into the trap?'
گفت من نفریفتم ز افسون اومیتوانستم که ریزم خون او
It replied, 'I was not deceived by his incantation;
I could have easily shed his blood.
لیک چون بسیار حق را نام بردنام حق خوش خوش مرا در دام برد
But because he invoked the name of Truth so much,
The name of Truth sweetly drew me into the trap.
چون بنام حق شدم در دام اوصد چو جان من فدای نام او
Since I entered his trap by the name of Truth,
May a hundred lives like mine be sacrificed for His name!
وصل همچون آتشی جان سوزدتیاد باید تا جهان افروزدت
Union will burn your soul like fire;
Remembrance is needed to illuminate your world.'
