بود مجنونی بغایت گرسنهسوی صحرا رفت سر پا برهنه
There was a madman, exceedingly hungry,
He went towards the desert, bare-headed and barefoot.
نانش میبایست چون نانش نبوددردش افزون گشت درمانش نبود
He needed bread; since he had no bread,
His pain increased, and he had no remedy.
گفت یا رب آشکارا و نهانگرسنه تر هست از من در جهان
He said, 'O Lord of the manifest and the hidden,
Is there anyone hungrier than me in the world?'
هاتفی گفتش که میآیم تراگرسنه تر از تو بنمایم ترا
An unseen caller said to him, 'I am coming to you,
I will show you someone hungrier than you.'
همچنان در دشت میشد یک تنهپیشش آمد پیر گرگی گرسنه
As he continued alone in the desert,
An old, hungry wolf appeared before him.
گرگ کو را دید غریدن گرفتجامهٔ دیوانه دریدن گرفت
When the wolf saw him, it began to growl,
And started tearing the madman's garments.
لرزه بر اندام مجنون اوفتاددر میان خاک در خون اوفتاد
Trembling fell upon the madman's body,
He fell amid the dust and blood.
گفت یارب لطف کن زارم مکشجان عزیزست این چنین خوارم مکش
He said, 'O Lord, show grace, do not kill me miserably,
Life is precious, do not kill me in such disgrace.
گرسنه تر دیدم از خود این بسموین زمان من سیر تر از هر کسم
I have seen one hungrier than myself; this is enough for me,
And at this moment, I am fuller than anyone.
سیر شد امشب شکم بی نان مرانیست نان در خورد ترازجان مرا
Tonight, my stomach has become full without bread,
There is no bread more fitting for me than my life.
بعد ازین جز جان نخواهم از تو منتا توانم نان نخواهم از تو من
After this, I will ask for nothing but my life from You,
As long as I am able, I will not ask for bread from You.
گرگ را تو بر سرم بگماشتیگر بفرمائی کند گرگ آشتی
You have set this wolf upon my head,
If You command, the wolf will make peace.
در چنین صحرا گرفتار بلااین چنین گرگیم باید آشنا
Caught in affliction in such a desert,
I must become acquainted with such a wolf.
این دمم با گرگ کردی در جوالهین رهائی ده مرا زین بد فعال
At this moment You have put me in a sack with a wolf,
Come, deliver me from this evil-doer.'
این سخنها چون بگفت آن سرنگونگرگ از پیشش بصحرا شد برون
When that humbled one spoke these words,
The wolf left his presence and went out into the desert.
گر تو خواهی تا بسر گرداندتچون فلک زیر و زبر گرداندت
If you wish for Him to lead you to the goal,
Turning you up and down like the heavens,
سرنگون نه پای در دریای اودر شکن با شیوه و سودای او
Step headlong into His sea,
Break yourself with His ways and passion.
