بخش ۲۴ - الحكایة و التمثیل / Section 24 - The Tale and the Parable

متن و ترجمه / Text and Translation

آن امام دین چنین گفته ست راست	کان چنان قربی که نزدیک خداست
That Imam of Religion has spoken truly thus That such proximity as is near to God
اهل لطف و طبع را کس در جهان	آن نیابد آشکارا و نهان
For the people of grace and nature in the world No one will find it openly or hidden
از زفانها هر سخن بیرون رود	از زفان شاعران موزون رود
From tongues every word goes out From the tongues of poets it goes out metrically
آنکه بود او سرور پیغامبران	گفت در زیر زفان شاعران
He who was the master of the prophets Said that beneath the tongue of poets
هست حق را گنجهای بیشمار	سر آن یک میندانند از هزار
There are countless treasures of truth The secret of which they do not know one in a thousand
هم قوافی کان خوش و یکسان بود	زان سخن بسیار در قرآن بود
Also rhymes that are pleasant and identical Of such speech there is much in the Quran
گر قوافی را رواجی نیستی	بر سر هر خطبه تاجی نیستی
If rhyme had no currency There would be no crown upon the head of any sermon
نظم ونثری کان میان امتست	از قوافی آن سخن را حرمتست
The verse and prose that exist among the community From rhyme that speech derives its sanctity
گر پیمبرمی نخواندی شعر راست	پادشا جولاهه گر نبود رواست
If the Prophet did not recite true poetry It would be as if it were fitting for a weaver to be king
چون جهودان ساحرش میخواندند	بت پرستان شاعرش میخواندند
Since the Jews called him a sorcerer And the idol-worshippers called him a poet
حق تعالی گفت این بس ظاهرست	کو بحق نه ساحر ونه شاعرست
God the Exalted said this is quite evident That in truth he is neither a sorcerer nor a poet
شاعری در منصب پیغامبری	همچو حجامیست در اسکندری
Being a poet in the rank of prophethood Is like being a cupper in Alexandria
آنکه باشد هر دو کونش ارزنی	خوشه چینی چون کند در خرمنی
He for whom both worlds are but a grain of millet How could he be a gleaner in a harvest?
حق چو گفتش نیست شاعر زان نبود	ورنه او را در سخن تاوان نبود
Because God said he is not a poet, he was not Otherwise he would have no inability in speech
بود او هم در عرب هم در عجم	افصح الفصحاء فی کل الامم
He was, among both Arabs and non-Arabs, The most eloquent of the eloquent in all nations
شاعران را نطق او خاموش کرد	در لفظش حلقهشان در گوش کرد
His speech silenced the poets The pearl of his words put a ring in their ears
هم فصیحان پیش او الکن شدند	هم ظریفان جهان کودن شدند
Even the eloquent became stutterers before him Even the clever ones of the world became dullards
باز با جبریل گفت ای محترم	من نیم قاری نبود او لاجرم
Again he said to Gabriel, O honorable one, I am not a reciter, so he was not necessarily
هر دو عالم زیر پایش بود خاک	گر نبود او قاری و شاعر چه باک
Both worlds were dust beneath his feet If he were not a reciter or a poet, what fear?
شعر از طبع آید و پیغامبران	طبع کی دارند همچون دیگران
Poetry comes from human nature, and the prophets, When do they have human nature like others?
روح قدسی را طبیعت کی بود	انبیا را جز شریعت کی بود
When does the Holy Spirit have human nature? When do prophets have anything but the Divine Law?
در سخن آمد بسی و اندکی	گر بسنجی وزن گیرد بیشکی
In speech there came both much and little If you weigh it, it undoubtedly takes on measure
شعر گفتن همچو زر پختن بود	در عروض آوردنش سختن بود
To compose poetry is like smelting gold Bringing it into prosody is to weigh it
لیکن آن کس را که زر باشد بسی	کی تواند سختن آن هرگز کسی
But for the one who has a lot of gold How could anyone ever weigh it all?
گر بسنجی زر زر موزون بود	ور بسی باشد ز وزن افزون بود
If you weigh gold, measured gold is good But if there is much, it exceeds the weight
زر چو در میزان نمیگنجد بسی	پس زر بسیار چون سنجد کسی
Since much gold cannot be contained in the scale Then how can anyone weigh abundant gold?
زر بسی سختن نه بس کاری بود	چون توان سختن چو بسیاری بود
Weighing much gold is not an easy task How can one weigh it when there is an abundance?
چون پیمبر خواجه اسرار بود	در خور سرش سخن بسیار بود
Since the Prophet was the master of secrets His speech was abundant, befitting his secrets
چون بسختن در نمیآید زرش	همچنان ناسخته میشد از برش
Because his gold could not be weighed It emanated from him unweighed
گر زر سخته دهد مرد کریم	گرچه موزون باشد آن باشد سلیم
If a generous man gives weighed gold Even if it is measured, it is flawless
چون زر ناسخته او پخته بود	سخت اگر گفتی سخن هم سخته بود
Since his unweighed gold was pure If he spoke weightily, his speech was also weighed
حاتم طی را ترازو کی نکوست	لیک فرش بخل را زوطی نکوست
When is a scale fitting for Hatim of Tayy? But for the spread of miserliness, a scale is fitting
پادشا را زور بازو بس بود	دست زر پاشش ترازو بس بود
For a king, the strength of his arm is enough His gold-scattering hand is enough of a scale.
