Section 28 - The Tale and the Parable

Text and Translation

Asma'i was riding along a road,
He saw a latrine cleaner busy at work.
He was saying to his soul, "O precious soul,
I have freed you from base labor.
I have always held you in high regard,
And I have kept you for the sake of a good name."
Asma'i said to him, "You, at least, should not say this!
Do not speak these words here in this miserable state!
Since you are a worker in filth,
What in the world could be more degrading than this?"
He replied, "What would be a more degrading fall for me,
Is standing at the door of someone like you!
Whoever is a servant to other people,
My work is a hundred times better than his.
Even if there were no path for me but to have my head severed,
I would not bow my neck to bear the burden of obligation."
