جهان صدق شیخ گورگانیکه قطب وقت خود بود از معانی
The world of truth, Sheikh Gorgani,
Who was the pole of his time in spiritual meanings.
یکی گربه بدی در خانقاهشکه دیدی شیخ روزی چند راهش
There was a cat in his khanqah,
Whom the Sheikh saw several times a day.
مگر در دست و در پای از ادیمشغلافی کرده بودندی مقیمش
Perhaps on its hands and feet, from leather,
They had permanently made a sheath for it,
که تا چون می رود هر لحظه از جاینه دست او شود آلوده نه پای
So that as it moved from place to place every moment,
Neither its hands nor its feet would become soiled.
زمانی در کنار شیخ رفتیزمانی بر سر سجاده خفتی
At times it would go to the Sheikh's side,
At times it would sleep on the prayer rug.
چو بودی ساعتی در دادی آوازکه تا خادم بر او آمدی باز
When an hour passed, it would cry out,
So that the servant would come back to it.
بدست خود ببستی دستوانشوز آنجا آن زمان کردی روانش
With his own hand, he would tie its gloves,
And from there, at that time, he would set it on its way.
بمطبخ بود مأواگه گرفتهنبودی گوشتی از وی نهفته
Its dwelling place was in the kitchen;
No meat was hidden from it.
نبردی هیچ چیز از پخته و خاممگر چیزی که دادندی بهنگام
It took nothing, neither cooked nor raw,
Except what they gave it at the proper time.
امین خانقاه و سفره بودیندیدی کس که چیزی در ربودی
It was the trustee of the khanqah and the table;
No one saw it snatch anything.
مگر یک روز در مطبخ شبانگاهزتابه گوشتی بربود ناگاه
Except one day in the kitchen at nightfall,
It suddenly snatched some meat from the pan.
به آخر خادم او را چون طلب کردبسی گوشش بمالید و أدب کرد
Finally, when the servant sought it out,
He rubbed its ears much and disciplined it.
بیامد گربه پیش شیخ دیگرنشست از خشم در کنجی مجاور
The cat came before the Sheikh again;
It sat in a nearby corner in anger.
طلب کردش ز خادم شیخ آنگاهبگفتش خادم آنچ افتاد در راه
Then the Sheikh sought it from the servant;
The servant told him what had happened on the way.
بخواند آن گربه را شیخ وفاداربدو گفتا چرا کردی چنین کار
The faithful Sheikh called that cat;
He said to it, 'Why did you do such a thing?'
مگر آن گربه بود آبستن آنگاهشد و آورد سه بچه به سه راه
Perhaps that cat was pregnant then;
It went and brought three kittens in three ways.
به پیش شیخشان بنهاد برخاکدرختی دید آنجا سخت غمناک
It placed them on the ground before the Sheikh;
It saw a tree there, very sorrowful.
ز خشم خادم آنجا رفت و بنشستنظر بگشاد و لب از بانگ در بست
From the servant's anger, it went and sat there;
It opened its gaze and closed its lips from sound.
چو شیخ آن دید از خادم برآشفتتعجب کرد شیخ و خویش را گفت
When the Sheikh saw that, he became enraged with the servant;
The Sheikh marveled and said to himself:
که گربه بی شکی معذور بودستز خورد خویشتن بس دور بودست
'Doubtless the cat was excused;
It was very far from eating for itself.
ازو این که ترک ادب بودولی از احتیاجش این طلب بود
Although this was a lack of manners from it,
Yet this seeking was out of its necessity.
کسی را در ضرورة گر مقامستشود حالی مباحش گر حرامست
If someone is in a state of necessity,
What is forbidden becomes permissible for him.
برای بچه کم از عنکبوتیبرآرد از دهان شیر قوتی
For a child, even less than a spider,
It brings forth sustenance from the lion's mouth.
ز گربه آنچه کرد او نه غریبستکه پیوند بچه کاری عجیبست
What the cat did is not strange,
For the bond of a child is a wondrous thing.
ترا تا بچهٔ ظاهر نگرددغم یک بچه در خاطر نگردد
Until you have an external child,
The grief for a child does not enter your mind.'
بخادم گفت شیخ کار دیدهکه هست این بی زبان تیمار دیده
The experienced Sheikh said to the servant:
'This speechless one has seen suffering.
ز چشم تو باستادست بر شاخباستغفار گردد با تو گستاخ
Because of your eye, it stands on the branch;
Through repentance, it will become bold with you.'
همی خادم ز سر دستار بنهادبر گربه باستغفار استاد
Immediately the servant set down his turban;
He stood before the cat in repentance.
نه استغفار او را هیچ اثر بودنه در وی گربه را روی نظر بود
Neither did his repentance have any effect,
Nor did the cat have any look for him.
به آخر شیخ شد حرفی برو خواندشفاعت کرد و از شاخش فرو خواند
Finally the Sheikh went and read a word to it;
He interceded and called it down from the branch.
فرود آمد ز بالا گربه ناگاهبه پای شیخ می غلطید در راه
Suddenly the cat came down from above;
It was rolling at the Sheikh's feet on the path.
خروشی از میان جمع برخاستزهر دل آتشی چون شمع برخاست
A clamor arose from among the assembly;
From every heart, a fire like a candle arose.
همه از گربهٔ هم رنگ گشتندبه شکر آن شکر هم تنگ گشتند
All became of the same color as the cat;
In thanks for that sugar, they became narrow.
اگر صد عالمت پیوند باشدنه چون پیوند یک فرزند باشد
If you have a hundred worldly bonds,
It is not like the bond of one child.
کسی کو فارغ از فرزند آمدخدای پاک بی مانند آمد
He who came free from a child,
Became the pure, Peerless God.
